While we continue to bring you all the updates from the G20 summit today, let's shift focus to Morocco for a moment where a strong earthquake has killed at least 296 people.

The earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT) with its epicentre in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his condolences to the victims and offered assistance to Morocco in this "difficult time".

"In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The presidents of Russia and China will not be at the G20.

Vladimir Putin says his schedule is too busy but he likely wants to avoid the possibility of arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC) which earlier this year issued a warrant for Mr Putin’s arrest, accusing him of war crimes in Ukraine.

That conflict will likely be the sticking point at the G20. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation” rather than an invasion or a war.

It won’t agree to any official statement saying that Russia must withdraw. China’s Xi Jinping has attended every G20 summit since taking office, but is skipping this one. US President Joe Biden has said he’s disappointed and India is likely to see it as a snub.

China is Russia’s strongest strategic partner and has been reluctant to sign anything condemning Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.

The strict sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries have meant trade between the two countries increased by 30% last year.

  3. Security tightened in Delhipublished at 04:07 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

Tens of thousands of security personnel have been deployed in Delhi this week to ensure the safety of delegates and leaders who are visiting for the summit. The government has declared three days of holidays for most schools and offices in Delhi.

Security restrictions are especially severe in central Delhi, where the summit venue is located. Theatres, restaurants and most shops in the area are shut from Friday to Sunday, and people living here have been asked to stay home unless it’s an emergency.

While the Delhi police is in charge of overall security, thousands of personnel have been brought in from other government services, including paramilitary forces. The Indian Air Force’s fighter planes have also been deployed to safeguard Delhi's skies, reports say.

The G20 - or Group of Twenty(G20) - refers to a club of countries which meets annually to discuss plans for the world economy. It includes 19 of the world's largest economies plus a representative from the European Union. Together, they represent more than 85% of the world’s economic output and two-thirds of the global population. Every year, special invitations are also extended to some non-member countries.

The summit takes place over two days and the agenda has broadened in recent years to include topics such as climate change and sustainable energy. India currently holds the G20 presidency - which rotates annually between members - and will hand it over to Brazil. You can read more about the G20 here.

The Indian capital, especially the New Delhi district where the summit venue Pragati Maidan is located, is all decked up to receive the high-profile guests. The main meetings will take place in Bharat Mandapam, a conch shell-shaped sprawling building constructed at a cost of 27bn rupees($324m; £260m). A towering statue of Nataraja - the Hindu god Shiva in a dancing pose - adorns the building’s front.

In less than an hour from now, leaders from the G20 countries will start arriving at the venue. Over the past couple of days, we’ve seen a number of dignitaries arrive in the city to a red carpet welcome.

President Biden flew in early for a bilateral with PM Modi on Friday. The Saudi Crown Prince will stay on for a state visit which begins on Monday.

Hello and welcome to the BBC’s live coverage of the G20 summit happening this weekend in India’s capital, Delhi.

World leaders, including Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak and Emmanuel Macron, are in town to discuss issues ranging from climate change to sustainable development and the Ukraine war.

What’s also made news is the big names that are staying away: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It’s the most high-profile event to be held in India in years, and excitement is high. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has used the G20 presidency as a platform to advocate for countries from the Global South, will be hoping that the summit ends on a high - with a joint communique that all the leaders agree on.

But differing positions on the Ukraine war - India has not condemned Russia’s invasion - could make that hard.

Stay with us as we bring you all the updates from the event.
