  5. Zuma launches fresh inquiry over Marikanapublished at 15:53

    South Africa President Jacob Zuma has ordered an investigation into "allegations of misconduct" by police chief Riah Phiyega:

    It relates to the 2012 Marikana massacre in which 34 striking miners were shot dead by police.

    An earlier inquiry had criticised the police, unions and mining companies over what happened.

    This new investigation will now, among other things, looking into whether Ms Phiyega "misled" the original inquiry.

  6. Burkina Faso presidential guard 'dissolved'published at 14:58

    The speaker of Burkina Faso's transitional parliament, Moumina Cherif Sy, has announced the dissolution of the presidential guard (RSP), which seized power in a coup last week, according to a statement seen by BBC Afrique (see photo below). 

    Mr Sy opposes the coup and declared himself the new leader last week following the detention of the interim president and prime minister.  

    Article 1 of the "presidential decree" issued by Mr Sy (translated from French) reads: 

    "The Regiment of the Presidential Guard (RSP) is hereby dissolved. 

    Article 2: 

    "Officers, junior officers, junior officers, and soldiers of the RSP are now placed at the disposition of the military Chief of Staff.

    Two journalists in the Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou have been posting about the atmosphere in front of the presidential palace since an army deadline for coup leaders to surrender expired more than two hours ago.
