  2. Drug-resistant malaria could affect African mosquitoespublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 20 October 2015

    A drug-resistant malaria parasite found in South East Asia can also infect mosquito species in Africa, a study shows.

    The experiments were carried out in a laboratory, but they suggest the spread of this deadly strain into the continent is possible.

    The scientists say the consequences of this would be dire, putting millions of lives at risk.

    As reports of injuries at opposition protests on the streets of the Congolese capital Brazzaville come in, people have also been going online to vent their displeasure at President Denis Sassou Nguesso's attempt to change the constitution so he can run for a third term. 

    And they've been using one phrase in particular, which is now trending in the country: "Sassoufit" (pronounced: "Sa Sufi").

  5. Nigeria drops threat to cut off gas to Ghanapublished at 16:34

    Nigeria's threat to cut off a large part of the gas supply to Ghana over an unpaid debt has been lifted after a deal was struck.

    The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it was owed $169m (£110m) by Ghana's Volta River Authority.

    But the NNPC said in a series of tweets that talks between the Federal Government (FG) and Ghana's government have been successful:

  6. Take-off for DRC's new airlinepublished at 15.14

    The Democratic Republic of Congo's new national airline completed its maiden commercial flight earlier today, landing in Lubumbashi from the capital, Kinshasa. 

    Congo Airways is the first national airline to take to the skies in 12 years, after previous carriers closed over financial difficulties, reports BBC Afrique's Poly Mizalia from Kinshasa.

    The student protests in South Africa over a hike in fees have now spread to at least six universities.

    It has also be reported that 20 students have been arrested in Cape Town.

    Demonstrations began at Wits University in Johannesburg, and have now been seen at the University of Cape Town, Rhodes University, Fort Hare University, Stellenbosch University and Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

  9. Pistorius 'cannot compete in Paralympic events'published at 12:41

    Oscar Pistorius will not be able to compete in any Paralympic event until 2019, according to spokesman for the International Paralympic Committee Craig Spence.

    He told the BBC there is a "policy that any athlete who is serving a sentence has to serve that sentence in full".

    Photos and videos are being posted on social media from the University of Cape Town, where students have been continuing their protests against proposed fee increases. 

    Police have made several arrests, enforcing a high court order, which came into force this morning, banning students from erecting barricades on the campus or disrupting university activities.
