Overall, The Harmony party polled 19% with the pro-EU For Development party taking 12% and two populist parties, the KPV LV and the New Conservatives winning 27% between them.

Guernsey voters overwhelmingly backed the KPV LV, with 146 votes.

Hedgehogs remain a common sight in gardens and verges around Alderney.

The UK has seen hedgehogs decline by more than a third in the past 10 years but it's believed the Alderney population is stable.

The hedgehogs found there are thought to originate from only a handful of pairs - not being native to the island originally.

The hedgehogs were brought to the island as pets in the 1960s that subsequently either escaped or were released into the wild.

    Simon Fairclough

    Guernsey Political Reporter

The number of people who will have to vote in Guernsey's first ever referendum to make its result binding on the States is 12,746.

Crews were called to the flats on La Grande Piece, St Peter, on Monday at 01:14.

Two residents managed to escape, but officers told others to stay inside after hearing the stairwell was filling with smoke.

The fire was found in the bin store of the block of flats.

A Jersey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said it was important for people to have a "fire escape plan".

  9. Calls for university to tackle 'skills gap' in Jersey

    BBC Radio Jersey

There are new calls for a university in the Channel Islands to encourage more young people to stay and fill a "skills gap" which is increasing Jersey's population.

    University

Island politicians say many talented young people leave the island to forge their careers elsewhere, before coming back later in life.

Jersey's council of ministers says it wants to open a "higher education centre of excellence", so young people can have their university experience closer to home.

According to the last census, in 2011, less than 13% of islanders were aged between 20 and 29. Whilst 40 to 49-year-olds made up more than 17% of the population of more than 105,000.

Ministers say the skills gap is forcing the public and private sectors to bring in workers from overseas, and closing it could help with concerns over the island's growing population.
