Rent for people living in States housing in Jersey won't go up by more than 4% a year in future, it's been confirmed.

Past increases were based on the Retail Prices Index (RPI) - a measure of inflation - but after the RPI rose by more than usual this year, the government overhauled the system.

Rises will still be pegged to inflation, but only up to a maximum of 4%.

However, under the changes, rents will always go up by at least 2.5%. The housing minister says a new board will start work next year to review the government's rent policies

Loganair will offer the flights on Saturdays between 11 May and 14 Sept.

"Last year we provided a seasonal link to Glasgow, which proved to be extremely popular with passengers travelling in both directions, part of the motivation behind adding Edinburgh to next year's schedule," said Jonathan Hinkles, managing director of Loganair.

The treatment aims to stop islanders suffering the progressive eye disease that can cause distorted vision.

Keratoconus sees the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape deflecting light as it enters the eye.

Guernsey's Committee for Health and Social Care has agreed to fun the preventative treatment, which it says costs about £2,000 per patient per annum.

The decision is part of a review of the "processes and procedures in place surrounding drugs and treatments".

It could cost an extra £20 for Jersey drivers going to multiple European countries after Brexit.

Island politicians will next month be asked to sign up to the Vienna Convention, external, and if they do, Jersey vehicles will continue to be allowed to drive on the continent.

But, depending on the UK's Brexit deal, licences may only be accepted alongside an international driving permit - which will cost £10.

However, permits accepted in Spain, Malta, Cyprus and Ireland are different to those accepted in the rest of Europe, so islanders may need two separate documents to drive in multiple countries.

Drivers without the correct permit could be turned away at the border, or fined.

The Infrastructure Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said he hopes an additional agreement can be reached with Spanish authorities, negating the need for a second permit there.

The police in Jersey could get more powers to search people's computers under planned changes to the cyber crime law.

It aims to bring Jersey up to date with tackling increasingly sophisticated crime involving computers and data storage.

This includes strengthening the authority's capacity to prosecute people for having images of child abuse.

The States are due to debate the new law in January.

A man was hit by a van outside a convenience store in Jersey, police have said.

It happened outside Checkers Xpress at First Tower on 26 October at about 15:30.

Officers said two vans were parked outside the store and a man in his 40s was struck by one of them when crossing the road towards Hansford Lane.

They added the driver did stop and speak with the man who suffered minor injuries, but they'd like to speak to him again as well as anyone who was around at the time.

Cervical screening is to be provided free of charge for all eligible women in Guernsey and Alderney, subject to funding.

At the moment, most women have to pay for screenings which are done at their GP surgery.

The Committee for Health & Social Care (HSC) has announced an in-principle decision to launch the free service.

No date has yet been announced, and women who are due a cervical screening test are advised to go ahead with it as usual.

The committee is looking at ways of ensuring that it can be run and funded on a sustainable basis.

In the meantime, funding for this screening programme has been included in HSC’s budget submission for next year, which is subject to approval of the States next week.

Jake Prince, Sol Solomon, Calvin Weir and Daryl Wilson were on target for St Peter who stay in third place having won all three of their games this season.

A company is planning to spend more than £4m to redevelop the old BHS building in St Helier.

Sports Direct, which now owns the site, would move into the shop on King Street, alongside another clothing store and a cafe.

The plans include adding an extra floor, redesigning the outside and spending £30,000 on public art.

The outside, which has not been remodelled since the 1960s, would be overhauled with white stone and large windows.

Architects Axis Mason said the proposals were a vote of confidence in the town centre and they hoped it would encourage more buildings to undergo renovation.

The Jersey Retail Association, which promotes the interests of local shops, said it welcomed the investment in King Street.

However, the planning authority would need to approve the changes - a process that could take months.

A cyclist has been taken to hospital following a crash with a lorry in Jersey, police have said.

It happened at about 08:00 at the West Park traffic lights in St Helier.

Emergency crews at the scene said the injuries did not appear to be life threatening, but the 55-year-old man was taken to Jersey General Hospital.

The crash also involved a white lorry, driven by a 45-year-old man.

A lane was closed on Victoria Avenue after the crash.

The road was fully reopened at 08:30.

The president of the Overseas Aid and Development Commission wants Guernsey to give significantly more in aid to developing countries.

Emily Yerby has seconded a budget amendment calling for research into how the island could increase its contribution from the current 0.1% of annual wealth - currently about £2.9m - to 0.7% per cent, to match the UK's percentage and also an internationally-recognised target for such aid.

Deputy Yerby said she wanted to see how that larger figure could be reached over the coming decade, and there was support for this.

She said: "A number of States members have said that they would like to see that commitment increased, but obviously that has to be done in a sustainable way

"We need to be thinking about how we can spend it effectively and have it raised effectively."

There are concerns small garages could struggle if they are asked to carry out MoT-style tests on Jersey vehicles after Brexit.

No decision has yet been made on who will do the tests, which are needed as part of an agreement to ensure islanders can drive in Europe after March 2019. The checks are expected to cost between £40 and £60.

The island's government is considering doing them itself, while other options include signing a franchise agreement with a local company, or giving responsibility to existing garages.

Officials said it could cost up to £100,000 for a business to set up a testing centre.

Motor traders said many smaller garages did not have the space, staff or money to do the tests, and this could mean larger businesses monopolising the work available.
