A project to photograph native speakers of Guernsey’s language to create a social history record of Guernésiais has begun.

Last Native Speakers is a partnership between the Guernsey Language Commission and photographer Aaron Yeandle.

The term "native" is defined as someone who spoke Guernésiais before they went to school - where they then learned English.

As well as having their photographs taken, participants will also be invited to record a short piece of audio in Guernésiais.

The photographs and audio will be kept in the Guernsey Museums archive, with the intention to display them as an exhibition in the future.

It's estimated there are about 100 native speakers of Guernésiais today and the project team want as many as possible to come forward for the project.

Jersey "punches above its weight in the range and quality of its culture", according to a new report, external.

But the government has been criticised over its relatively low levels of funding for the arts "over many years".

The review into Jersey’s culture, arts and heritage was funded by the States.

Twenty recommendations are now being considered by Deputy Montfort Tadier, the Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture.

The recommendations include:

• Building a more effective partnership between cultural organisations and the States.
• Providing more internships, apprenticeships and other career development opportunities.
• Increasing involvement and participation in the arts.
• Including the arts in redevelopment and regeneration plans, including a retail strategy for St Helier.
• Planning for the future of Jersey Opera House after 2020.
• Investing in the Jersey Arts Centre, Elizabeth Castle and Jersey Museum.
• Developing the island’s native language, Jèrriais.
• Exploring the potential of the digital and creative industries.
• Identifying new sources of funding.

Objects made by Guernsey World War Two deportees have been lent to Museum Biberach, in Germany.

From September 1942, after Britain expelled German citizens from Iran about 1,000 British citizens and their families were taken from occupied Guernsey to Biberach internment camp.

About 2,200 people from the Channel Islands were removed to camps in Dorsten, Biberach, Wurzach, Laufen and Compiègne.

Biberach was used as a civilian internment camp for people mainly from Guernsey until its liberation by French forces on 23 April 1945.

The Lager Lindele - life behind barbed wire exhibition includes memorabilia, models, films and photographs describing the daily life of deportees.

Suggested designs for a permanent memorial on the site of the former camp are also included.

Frank Brunecker, director of the Museum Biberach, said: “It is a historic stroke of luck that Guernsey and Biberach enjoy a lively and cordial exchange today. It is fortunate - and brings along hope – that war and enmity, imprisonment in camps and injustice can turn into lifelong friendships and a close partnership that unites nations.”

"A policy of 'presumed consent unless opted out' has the potential to transform organ availability," says the Guernsey and Alderney Division of the British Medical Association.

It's ahead of a States debate this week on replacing the current opt-in scheme with an opt-out one.

The BMA division said: "Doctors in Guernsey are well aware of the tragic circumstances that sometimes arises when someone’s life is blighted by organ failure.

"It is particularly upsetting when the Doctor knows that an appropriate transplanted organ would transform a patient’s life, but none are available.

"Knowing that a loved one’s organs have helped others to live healthy lives can also be a great comfort in bereavement."

The proposals from the Committee for Health and Social Care include family members still having a role in confirming decisions and that appropriate safeguards and exemptions are in place.

Opt-out schemes have been approved in Wales, Jersey and Scotland with discussions about a change taking place in England and the Isle of Man.

The Crown Dependencies are part of a UK-wide organ donation and transplant system.

There's been a drop in the number of donated Christmas shoe boxes to people in Romania, a Jersey charity has said.

The annual scheme, organised by charity Mustard Seed Jersey, sees shoe boxes packed with toys sent from Jersey to Romanian school children as well as others.

Head of the charity, Rose Helie, said islanders made up about 600 boxes less than the total for 2017, which was 3684.

She added there won't be enough boxes for all the adults this year, but there are enough for every child the charity visits.

She was unsure why there were fewer this winter...

The publicly-owned land at Le Parc de la Petite Falaise, Trinity, was designated a park - meaning it was difficult for parish authorities to tackle vehicles that have been abandoned or parked there for long periods.

Changed into a public car park by a ministerial decision the parish authorities now have more power to ensure that its parking spaces are not abused.

They have introduced a maximum stay period of 12 hours in any 24-hour period, and will be able to place restrictions on commercial vehicles longer than 15ft (4.6m).

Two artists who spent much of their lives in Jersey have had a street in Paris named after them.

Claude Cahun, the transgender surrealist artist who was known for her photography, and her partner Marcel Moore lived in Jersey during the occupation.

They were both known for making a stand against the Nazis.

The mayor of Paris has written to Jersey Heritage to tell them a street in the sixth district of Paris will be renamed Allee Claude Cahun et Marcel Moore.

Solutions need to be found for the problem of in-work poverty in Guernsey.

It is defined as individuals living in households where the household income is below the poverty threshold.

A review into the issue by the Scrutiny Management Committee found the cost of accessing primary healthcare and the lack of affordable accommodation were some of the areas that needed to addressed.

The President of the Scrutiny Management Committee, Deputy Chris Green, said it was time for action to be taken.

He said: "If we can't deal with something like in-work poverty, I do fear for the success of the States. The time is now and we need to get going on some proper solutions."

Guernsey Police are warning islanders not to drink and drive over the Christmas period as they launch their annual crackdown.

Thieves targeted the cycle park outside Sports Direct, Church Square, St Peter Port, between 08:00 on Thursday, 15 November and 00:30 on Friday, 16 November, 2018.

Guernsey Police say two bicycle lights, one red and one black and a black Specialized saddle bag were taken.

The undersea cable between Guernsey and Jersey that is used to transfer electricity - which is transferred from France by two cables to Jersey - has been repaired.

Guernsey Electricity says the work was completed "late last week" and testing is being carried out before the cable returns to service.

In the meantime the firm's 10 diesel generators will continue to provide all the island's power.

Sally-Ann David, chief operating officer, said: "Over the weekend our engineers concluded cable testing and recommissioned the Barker’s Quarry transformer in Guernsey, prior to energising the cable.

"On-going monitoring of the cable link will continue before it is returned to full service later this week.

"Guernsey Electricity is grateful to all employees and contractors involved in the complex repair project... in addition, Guernsey Electricity extends thanks and appreciation to our power station neighbours and customers for their patience and understanding throughout."
