  1. Guernsey-Jersey power cable suffers new 'potential issue'published at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    BBC Radio Guernsey

A cable which suffered a fault that resulted in a Guernsey-wide power cut has suffered a "potential issue" in a different location, utility bosses say.

Guernsey Electricity said monitoring of the GJ1 cable after its repair and re-energisation found the problem on a link about 9km (5.6 miles) offshore from Jersey.

The work was being carried out to assess whether the cable was stable enough to be returned to full service.

Utility chief Alan Bates said further testing was "necessary before we can return the cable to full service".

He said that, until then, "the load on the link has been reduced whilst we work with the cable manufacturer to determine the most appropriate course of action".

He added that on-island electricity was being provided by the Vale power station "to supplement the reduced supply from the cable and meet island demand".

  3. Jersey and Guernsey both on Dutch financial blacklistpublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    BBC Channel Islands News

Jersey and Guernsey have both been included on a Dutch financial blacklist aimed at tackling tax avoidance.

The islands are included in a list of 21 places around the world that ask some businesses to pay less than 9%.

Jersey's government has played down the move, saying the list did not take into account good tax practices, and the island was only on it because of its corporate tax rate.

Jersey States said it was repeating its commitment to transparency and the exchange of information.

The president of Guernsey's Policy & Resources Committee, Deputy Gavin St Pier, said it was "disappointing" the Netherlands made the inclusion, and it was based on "the rate of corporate tax alone".

He said that "such a reliance on tax rates" did not "take into account transparency", and that Guernsey's work was "in fact part of the solution, not part of the problem".

The new Channel Islands Air Search plane is due to make its first test flight this week.

The charity's last aircraft crashed on a rescue mission in November 2013, leaving the islands without a dedicated air search plane since then.

That aircraft, the Lion's Pride, came down near Devil's Hole in St Mary, Jersey, during a search mission. No-one was injured, but the plane was written off and, since then, the charity has been raising £800,000 to pay for a new aircraft.

There have been a number of delays. But the plane has been built and the engine tested.

Organisation chief officer John Fitzgerald said it was due to take to the skies for the first time this week, before being painted and fitted out with search equipment.

Following final checks, he said the plane would then be delivered to its base in Guernsey.

  10. RNLI 'yet to meet new Jersey lifeboat charity'published at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    BBC Radio Jersey

The RNLI has yet to meet the independent Jersey Lifeboat Association almost a year since it officially became a charity, association leaders say.

The organisation was set up after the former St Helier lifeboat crew split from the RNLI and the island's station was closed following a "breakdown in relations" between the charity and crew.

Association chairman Ben Shenton said his organisation had approached the RNLI a number of times and wanted to talk about how they could work together...

Mr Shenton has also issued fresh calls for an independent investigation into what went wrong at the Albert Pier lifeboat station.

He says the people of Jersey deserve to know the truth about what happened.

The RNLI has been contacted for a response.

The panel will be led by St Saviour Deputy Kevin Pamplin, and will manage plans for events and community projects.

The politicians on the group will be supported by civil servants.

It is hoped residents will share their thoughts and get involved in the planning process.

Liberation Day marks 9 May 1945 when the island was freed from Nazi German occupation after five years.

    Brent Pilnick
    BBC Sport at Sandy Park

Jersey Reds full-back Auguy Slowik says beating the likes of former World Player of the Year Beauden Barrett to win Sky Sports' Try of the Year award "gave him goosebumps".

The island player's try, which ended an impressive team running move that began inside their own try area and went the length of the pitch - helped them inflict a first defeat of the season on Championship leaders London Irish at St Peter.

"I didn't even realise I'd be in the competition, so just to be nominated for it was very surreal," he told BBC Radio Jersey.

"But to then end up winning it so easily, with 58% of the vote, was a crazy few days.

"It gave me goosebumps - you look at the list of players I'm up against, Barbarian tries, Brodie Retallick, Beauden Barrett, I'm up against some huge names, and there's just me a Championship rugby player for Jersey in a list of full internationals."

  13. Guernsey's La Grande Mare Hotel is soldpublished at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    Penny Elderfield
    BBC Channel Islands News

Guernsey's La Grande Mare Hotel has been sold.

The four-star hotel and golf club has been bought by the billionaires Stephen and Margaret Lansdown when the sale went through on New Year's Eve.

The Vermeulen family have run the hotel for more than 20 years. Chris Vermeulen and his brother, Simon, have both retired from the business, and a new general manager has been appointed.

Guernsey-based Mr Lansdown - a majority shareholder of Bristol City FC - said he had been a member of the golf club for several years and knew the owners were looking at options for the future.

He said he saw the purchase as a great opportunity to invest in something on his doorstep.

  14. Plans to alter Le Foulon crematorium submittedpublished at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    BBC Radio Guernsey

Plans have been submitted to alter the crematorium at Le Foulon.

The works, if approved, will extend the existing crematorium, alter the vehicle entrance from Route Isabelle, create a new car park on the west boundary and extend the groundsman's workshop.

Mark Ogier - the Head of States Strategy at States Trading Assets - says he's confident the project will stick to the budget...

The plans follow a detailed study of options for replacing the island's existing, outdated cremation equipment.

It included consideration of alternative locations where a new facility could be housed.

Key stakeholders, including local funeral directors, were consulted as part of the evaluation process.

  16. Online petitions fail to get signatures for States debatepublished at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    BBC Radio Jersey

Almost a quarter of the online petitions launched in Jersey have got enough signatures for a minister to respond - but none have got enough to trigger a debate in the States, figures have revealed.

It's a year since politicians agreed to introduce the system - which went online in August.

In that time, 60 appeals have been launched, and 13 have got more than 1,000 signatures - the number needed for a minister to respond.

petition websiteImage source, States of Jersey

For a petition to be discussed in the States, 5,000 signatures are required.

The original idea for online petitions in Jersey was put forward by Deputy Scott Wickenden who said it would make "islanders' voices heard" in the States Assembly.

The concept had already worked well in the UK for a number of years, but petitions there need to have 100,000 signatures or more to be debated in parliament.
