  1. CI weather: Heavy rain and some dry spells

    Clouding over on Monday evening with heavy rain for a time, before turning dry and clear towards dawn. Strong southwest winds turning squally on passage of the rain, before easing to a moderate westerly.

    Dry and bright at first on Tuesday, but heavy and blustery showers will move in from the northwest on a fresh breeze through the day.

  2. Rogue traders warning in Jersey

    Older people in Jersey are being warned to watch out for rogue traders who were offering work for what police said were extortionate prices.

    Officers said three men who did not have paperwork to work in Jersey had been offering to clean patios and drives.

    Insp Andy Bisson, of Jersey Police, said they seemed to be targeting vulnerable people.

    Officers added that they had intervened in four cases where agreements had been made and money was returned.

  3. St Peter progress in dramatic Kent Cup tie

    Jersey Premiership side St Peter made it through to the semi-finals of the Kent Senior Trophy after a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout win at Tunbridge Wells.

    Sol Solomon gave saints an early lead but Tom Pearson leveled for the home side on 12 minutes.

    Sam Dewhurst put St Peter back in front 12 minutes later, but the Kent side equalised just two minutes later.

    Calvin Weir's 33rd-minute goal put St Peter 3-2 ahead going into the second half but with 19 minutes to go Jake Beecroft got another equaliser.

    After a goalless extra time period St Peter came away with a nervy win on spot kicks.

  4. Girls encouraged to take up the HPV vaccination

    The head of public health in Guernsey is encouraging girls in the island to take up the HPV vaccination during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.

    Dr Nicola Brink said cervical cancer was one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer.

    Free cervical screening was introduced in Guernsey and Alderney for women aged between 25 and 65 at the start of the month and Dr Brink said there was now a comprehensive programme for treating it.

    Year 8 and 9 girls are being advised to get the vaccination, which is offered free of charge, as well as being asked to attend cervical screening when they are invited.

    Cervical Cancer Prevention Week runs until Sunday.

  5. 'Unexplained' death of Alderney man, 80, being investigated

    Police are investigating the "unexplained" death of an 80-year-old man in Alderney on Sunday.

    The death is not being treated as suspicious, and the man's family have been informed, a Guernsey Police spokesman said.

  6. Devon and Channel Islands among Britain in Bloom finalists

    A Devon town and a Channel Islands capital are two of 71 areas across the British Isles aiming for gardening gold after being nominated as Champion of Champions finalists in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) 2019 Britain in Bloom competition.

    Now in its 55th year, the finalists of Kingsbridge in Devon and St Helier in Jersey will be up against Durham, Perth, and Castlecaulfield in Northern Ireland.

    Truro (pictured) won the top award last year.

    All had been hand-picked by the judges based on their exceptional past performance, the RHS said.

    Judging chairman Darren Share said many of the finalists were on the front line of "tackling some of the UK’s biggest challenges such as climate change, plastic waste on beaches and declining pollinator populations".

    Elsewhere in the competition, a Cornish town, parts of Jersey and Sark are finalists in other categories.

    They include:

    • St Clement, Jersey - Coastal
    • St Aubin, Jersey - Village
    • Sark - Coastal

    The RHS Britain in Bloom judges will visit finalists during judging fortnight, starting on 29 July and the winners will be announced in October.

  7. Cannabis producer given planning permission

    A company which produces cannabis products has been given permission to develop a green house site in Guernsey.

    Deputy Mary Lowe says Celebrate Ltd, which trades as The Original Alternative, deals with cannabis products and the plants it will be growing are "quite possibly cannabis".

    The plans for the site in Douit Lane, the Vale, include a security fence topped with barbed wire, a security gate, security lights and motion sensors, processing and storage rooms, as well as facilities including a toilet, shower and kitchen.

  8. Christmas lottery grant application 'needed this month'

    Charities planning to apply for a grant from the Christmas Lottery are being reminded that the deadline for applications closes on 31 January.

    Last year, more than £190,000 was distributed to Guernsey charities from the lottery, helping 36 local organisations with a wide variety of projects.

    Anyone wanting to apply for a grant, should download an application pack from the Association of Guernsey Charities' website.

    Association bosses said they had "already received some applications", but were "keen to ensure that no organisations miss the opportunity to apply for funding".

  9. 1,500 people in Jersey 'without valid driving licences'

    About 1,500 people in Jersey could be driving without a valid driving licence because documents are expiring this month.

    Centennier Danny Scaife said 5,000 licences were estimated to need renewing before the end of the month and that, although many had renewed theirs, people were being urged to check what date their licence expired.

    If a licence is out of date, a drivers' insurance may be invalid too and they could be fined up to £10,000.

    Honorary police are to carry out road checks to pick up anyone whose license is not valid.

  11. Victoria Avenue and surrounding roads reopen

    The road junctions around Victoria Avenue in Jersey are now open again after traffic lights failed earlier.

    The lights went out about 05:00 and police closed all the junctions on to the avenue - which meant that buses were also diverted.

  12. Jersey 'will get medicine supplies post-Brexit'

    Jersey's Minister for External Relations says he has been assured that the island has been included in the UK stockpiling of medicine ahead of Brexit.

    Companies have stockpiled six weeks' worth of medicines, but UK pharmacists says that has resulted in them struggling to get hold of some medicines or paying vastly increased prices for them.

    Jersey pharmacists say they have run low on some antidepressants and HRT medicines because of the move - but insist they can work around the problem and patients shouldn't be concerned.

  13. Deaf gymnast, 10, 'not disadvantaged'

    A deaf Guernsey girl who's been selected for the British Gymnastics Tumbling Foundation Squad says she does not feel disadvantaged by her hearing impairment.

    Sophia Eisenhuth was diagnosed with profound hearing loss when she was just a few days old.

    She is now 10 and has joined the squad along with 23 other girls.

    If she is good enough she may be selected to represent Great Britain in the future.

    Sophia says she feels the same as every other gymnast in her club...

  14. 'Questions need to be asked’ of island’s judiciary

  15. Road closures due to Victoria Avenue traffic light failure

    In Jersey, the traffic lights at the eastern end of Victoria Avenue are not working and there are road closures in the area.

    There is no access westbound from the Esplanade to either Peirson Road or West Park Roundabout and no access from West Park Roundabout on to the Esplanade eastbound.

    Jersey Police say delays can be expected and are asking people to avoid the area if possible.
