Jersey's most senior politician says dialogue will either continue or begin with unions who have not accepted the States of Jersey's 2018/19 pay offer.

Earlier, Jersey members of teaching union the NASUWT voted in favour of strike action in response to what it said was a "derisory" pay award.

Senator John Le Fondre said: "The purpose of these talks is to explore ways in which we might resolve the pay review by agreement.

"It is important that these discussions take place in confidence and therefore no further comments will be made at this time,” the chairman of the States Employment Board added.

The man who led efforts to find missing footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson said he understood the family of the Argentinian footballer were "not content" with the decision to call the search off.

The striker, 28, went missing along with Mr Ibbotson when their plane disappeared from radar off the Channel Islands on Monday night.

Guernsey harbourmaster Captain David Barker said: "I'm absolutely confident that we couldn't have done any more."

"I haven't spoken since we took the decision to stop the search. That has been done by family liaison officers from the police forces in Cardiff and Humberside."

"I understand that Emeliano Sala's family are not content with the decision to end the search and I fully understand that," Captain Barker added.

The search for a Premier League footballer and a pilot whose plane vanished over the English Channel has been called off, authorities say.

Cardiff City's Argentine striker Emiliano Sala, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson were on the aircraft that disappeared from radar on Monday.

Rescuers continued the search by plane on Thursday morning focusing on coastal areas.

Announcing the "difficult" decision, Guernsey's harbourmaster Captain David Barker said 24 hours of continuous searching, covering 1,700 sq miles (2,735 sq km) had yielded no trace of the aircraft, pilot and passenger.

Jersey members of teaching union the NASUWT have voted in favour of strike action.

The vote is in response to "the imposition of a derisory pay award" by the States of Jersey, it said.

Almost two-thirds of members voted in the ballot, which saw 94% voting overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, and 96% voting in favour of action short of strike action.

Last month, public sector workers striked over pay - resulting in some teaching assistants, nurses, midwives, and manual workers being offered revised pay deals.

The union's general secretary Chris Keates said: “The NASUWT hopes that the States will now realise that they must come back to the table for meaningful talks about an improved pay award to avoid industrial action."

The BBC has approached the States of Jersey, who have repeatedly said there is no more money available to increase pay further.

Guernsey's Grammar School will reopen to all students on Friday after a broken boiler forced the school to close for the majority of students.

The fault meant the site had no heating or hot water, leading to classes being cancelled for years 7 to 10 and year 12.

Head teacher Kieran James said: "Our premises team worked into the early hours of this morning with a local contractor and, this morning, an engineer has visited, tested and approved the solution that has been put in place.

"The heating is now on and the fabric of the building is beginning to warm up, therefore, school will resume as normal tomorrow morning, Friday 25 January," he added.

EU citizens and their family members living in Guernsey when the UK leaves the EU will be able to apply for "settled status" or "further permission to remain", the States of Guernsey has announced.

The Home Affairs Committee will introduce an EU Settlement Scheme, similar to the UK's, at the end of March.

It will ensure EU nationals have the opportunity to register under the free scheme, it said.

Committee president Mary Lowe added: "The scheme follows a resolution by the States to seek to respect the rights of EU nationals resident on Brexit day, whatever the outcome of the exit negotiations."

Population laws controlling employment and residence in Guernsey Alderney and Sark will also continue to apply.

Guernsey's Grammar School is closed to the majority of students on Thursday.

It's due to a boiler breaking down which has left the site with no hot water or heating.

Years 7 to 10 and Year 12 should not attend but the sixth form centre remains unaffected.

The sixth form taster day will still go ahead for all Year 11 students across the island.

All staff will be on site as normal, while Year 13 students are on planned home study.

Head teacher Kieran James said it should be fixed by the end of the day.
