An experienced diver who has recovered aircraft from Channel Islands' waters says it is likely the missing Piper Pa-46 Malibu which disappeared on Monday will be found.

An investigation has begun into the missing plane carrying Cardiff City's £15m signing Emiliano Sala and pilot Dave Ibbotson on board.

Diver Richard Keen said: "I think there's a fairly good chance of finding the aircraft, and I am almost certain it's on the seabed.

"The aircraft shouldn't be too far from where it's last known position was, but you're never too sure of the facts - it's just a very sad affairs."

The search near Alderney was called off on Thursday afternoon despite pleas from Emiliano Sala's sister.

Other aircraft that have ditched around Guernsey were found quickly by crab pot fishermen, whose pots often tangle in aircraft on the sea bed, Mr Keen said.

Fishermen were known to operate in the area of the plane's last known location, meaning there was around a 50% chance of finding it in the next three months, Mr Keen added.
