The family of Emiliano Sala re-created search routes on a private plane journey close to his last known location, a spokesman for the family said.

With Sala's mother Mercedes and sister Romina beside him, salvage professional David Mearns told the media about their flight from Guernsey earlier.

The Premier League footballer and Pilot David Ibbotson have been missing since last Monday.

"What they did was re-create, as closely as possible the route of Emiliano Sala's plane at 5,000 feet descending to 2,200 feet," he said.

"They went over the location of the last radar contact - they did a clover leaf pattern so they could see what that was like.

"They actually re-created the type of pattern that the search and aircraft would have recreated.

"And that essentially has been the purpose of the family's visit to the island - to come here and understand what they're being told in terms of the search and rescue effort," Mr Mearns added.

The family of Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala is hoping an underwater search for the missing plane he was aboard will begin at the weekend.

Salvage professional David Mearns is leading the search efforts after the plane, also carrying pilot David Ibbotson, disappeared off radar near Alderney last Monday.

Mr Mearns said: "We have sourced and hired a survey vessel equipped with state of the art search equipment which will be used to conduct an underwater search for the plane's wreckage in the area of the plane's last radio contact."

It is hoped the search vessel, currently in Southampton, will be operating by Sunday, he added.

  6. Compensation payments could changepublished at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2019

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey could change its laws on how people are paid compensation if they are injured.

The States is being asked to follow the UK procedure in how compensation is calculated and paid.

In his proposal, the chief minister said it would make sure people got enough money to look after themselves if they were unable to work.

However, he also said the courts must be careful not to give too much as there had been cases where people have invested compensation money and ended up with far more.

He also wants compensation to be paid in installments, rather than all at once.

  9. Emiliano Sala: Salvage search 'only way forward'published at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2019

    BBC News Online

    John Fitzgerald

A search of the seabed off Alderney is the only plausible next step in the search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson, a Guernsey official has said.

Channel Islands Air Search's chief officer John Fitzgerald led last week's efforts last to find the downed plane for the voluntary service.

On David Mearn's planned salvage operation, he said: "At this stage it's only way forward - you can only do a seabed search.

"He's got the kit out there, and he'll do a really good job of it. It's the best way to go now," he added.

Earlier, the family of missing Cardiff City footballer were taken on a commercial plane to see the area that rescuers have been searching.

  10. Tax blacklist decision 'as soon as March'published at 13:34 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2019

    BBC News Online

Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man could find out as soon as 12 March if they are included on the European Union's 2019 tax blacklist, an EU official has said.

The Crown Dependencies have made changes to their tax laws after the bloc raised concerns over companies with little physical presence in the low tax islands routing their profits there.

"Technical discussions on the revision of the list of non-cooperative jurisdictions are currently ongoing," the source said.

EU finance ministers will make the final decision on the list following these talks, which could be as soon as 12 March, they added.

On Friday, senior politicians from Jersey and Guernsey visited Brussels to underline recent changes to tax law to EU officials.

Blacklisting comes with the potential for economic sanctions and significant damage to the reputations of the islands' financial services sectors, the backbone of the islands' economies.

A small delegation of the Sala family have flown over Alderney as they continue to seek answers about their son, Emiliano, who went missing with pilot David Ibbotson last week.

They are hoping to get some closure by seeing the search area as they were "struggling with very, very few answers about an unexplained loss", and were also hopeful some evidence of the plane would be found, a spokesman said.

During the weekend two fishing vessels resumed a small search for the missing Piper Malibu, which the Guernsey authorities stopped looking for on Thursday.

The family's search is expected to resume on Monday.

  13. Alderney airfield upgrade cost impact 'should be analysed'published at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2019

    Simon Fairclough
    BBC Guernsey Political Reporter

Guernsey's senior States committee is asking that the option of replacing Alderney's airfield with a ferry service is looked into before any commitment is made to improving the island's runway.

A recommendation to upgrade the runway will be debated by the States this week.

Deputies Gavin St Pier and Al Brouard are asking States members to consider the bigger financial picture before committing as much as £12m to upgrading the runway.

If the amendment is successful, at best it will mean more delay to the refurbishment of its airfield.

At worst, it could spell the beginning of the end for an airfield in Alderney - at least one paid for by the States of Guernsey.
