Guernsey could introduce no-fault divorces if islanders support a move by the island's government.

The change is being proposed in a shake-up of the island's 1939 marriage law. The UK is also considering similar measures.

The Guernsey reforms will remove the need to attribute fault to justify why a marriage has broken down, and also stop couples having to be separated for several years before divorcing without fault.

Guernsey's most senior senior committee is behind the plans.

"In our view this is the right thing for us, as a community. But, obviously, it is an important change and a big step - which is why we think it's important to consult on it and we'll be interested to see if the community share that view or hold a strongly different view."

Gavin St Pier, President, Policy and Resources Committee

The local community is being asked for its views on the proposed changes to marriage and divorce legislation by completing a survey.

  7. St Sampson site 'could take 125 homes'published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2019

    BBC Radio Guernsey

    Pointes Rocques site

Up to 125 homes could be built at Pointes Rocques after planners approved a framework for housing to be built on the St Sampson site.

It's one of three development frameworks approved on Monday - which provide planning guidance on how these sites might be developed.

In September, residents warned the area was unsuitable for more homes, citing concerns over access and traffic congestion.

The guidance from the Guernsey Development & Planning Authority has suggested fewer homes could be built on the site than initially thought, now between 75 and 125.

  8. Travel disruption expected in public square mergingpublished at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2019

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey's minister for infrastructure says he would not have chosen to merge the Weighbridge and Liberation Square, but would do his best to make it work.

Under the plans for the 75th anniversary of Liberation, the Esplanade link road - which separates the two areas - would be closed.

Deputy Kevin Lewis said it was a plan he had inherited and it was up to him to help keep traffic moving - even though it would mean some long diversions for some motorists...

  9. Deputy concern at election residency rulespublished at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2019

    BBC Radio Guernsey

A deputy for St Peter Port North says he's uncomfortable with new residency requirements to stand in Guernsey's general election next year.

Under proposals from the States Assembly and Constitution Committee, candidates who want to stand for election in 2020 will need to be a resident in Guernsey for a period of two years immediately before the date of their nomination - or for a period of at least five years in total.

Deputy John Gollop said the proposals limited the pool of potential candidates.

    Quote Message

I think I'm uncomfortable about any attempt by the States to restrict candidature. What this potentially does is stop potential politicians, and, indeed one or two former politicians - who might for some reason be out of the island for a while prior to the election - who under a technicality, would be unable to stand."

  12. Guernsey's marriage and divorce legislation under reviewpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 March 2019

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

The States of Guernsey is carrying out a review of the legislation that relates to divorce, marriage annulment and judicial separation.

The current law has been amended and changed over time but never substantially reformed.

The aim of the reform was to "modernise and simplify" the legislation to try to reduce conflict, whilst ensuring that the legislation was "inclusive and fair", the States said.

The local community is being asked for its views on proposed changes by completing a survey, which closes on 28 April.

    BBC Radio Guernsey

Guernsey's Home Affairs committee wants to create a new electoral roll because its current data is not accurate enough, it says.

    Ballot box

The proposed changes, which would take place ahead of Guernsey's 2020 general election, would cost £380,000.

Committee president Deputy Mary Lowe said the cost was worth it in the long-term.

She said: "How much price do you put on democracy, and we want to make sure with all the publicity that we get as many people as possible."

Alderney will welcome a team of historians and archaeologists this summer who are continuing to search for remains of a Roman settlement at Longis Bay.

Last year they found a Roman paved courtyard and chest-high walls, along with a 2nd Century bronze coin, a glass bead and good quality pottery fragments.

Alderney is already home to the UK's best preserved Roman small fort - the 4th Century fortification at a site known as the Nunnery.

Dr Jason Monaghan, who has been leading excavations in Alderney for the last decade, said the dig would raise the island's profile internationally.

Twelve cases of suspected child sexual exploitation have been reported to safeguarding services in Jersey since August last year.

The multi-agency safeguarding hub, which works with police and government departments to protect children, received the reports.

Police said two young people were currently being supported because of suspected child sexual exploitation.

Youth workers and police officers are to visit island schools this week to raise awareness of the problem.
