  2. New quarry planned for the Chouet headland

    Miranda Griffin

    BBC Radio Guernsey

A new quarry is being planned for the Chouet headland, as the existing site at Les Vardes nears the end of its life within the next few years.

Construction supplier Ronez has discussed plans with the States' Development and Planning Authority.

The site was designated as a mineral safeguarding area in the Island Development Plan because of the strategic importance of quarrying to Guernsey.

Ronez General Manager Steve Roussel said a quarry at Chouet would have a lifespan of at least 40 years, and about five million tonnes of aggregate could be extracted.

Mr Roussel said there were plans to minimise the impact of the quarry on the surrounding area.

Senior Vale constable Richard Leale said the douzaine would not object as there were guidelines to how stone could be quarried and which parts of the site should be protected from commercial activity.

  8. Maternity laws 'could force businesses to close'

    BBC Radio Jersey

Plans to give new parents extra maternity leave in Jersey could be put on hold after a scrutiny panel said they did not cater for small businesses.

    Maternity

Deputy Kirsten Morel, from the Economic Affairs Scrutiny Panel, said he was worried the laws were pushed through the island's government in a hurry - partly because politicians did not want to be seen obstructing parents' rights.

But he said the changes could force some businesses to close.

He said he wanted to postpone the debate on introducing the laws so they could be adapted to suit everyone, and give politicians the chance to look at it again.

The new community dairy will be separate from the government, and the farmer will run the business as their own.

  13. Jersey new parents deal could be withdrawn

    BBC Radio Jersey

A panel of Jersey politicians wants the States to withdraw plans to allow all new parents up to a year off work.

    Parent

Business leaders are worried the plans from ministers could cause problems for small companies because workers would be able to take their parental leave in four blocks over a three-year period.

The plans are due for debate at the end of the month.

But the Economic Affairs Scrutiny panel said it had "run out of time" to look at the plan's potential pitfalls in enough detail.
