Guernsey's States has voted against spending £700,000 to investigate extending the island's runway.

Members voted 20-19 against the move.

However members approved funding of £400,000 to work on contingency options relating to the island's sea links.

A former Jersey politician says he was "taken aback" when spotting several other errors in the new phone book - after the wrong name for the island's bailiff was pointed out earlier this week.

JT Group Limited has apologised to Sir William Bailhache (pictured) after John Fogarty was incorrectly listed as Jersey's bailiff.

It sold the rights to publish the book to Guernsey company Yabsta - which has also apologised.

Phil Rondel, who served as a deputy in St John until 2005, said it took him fewer than five minutes to find a number of other mistakes...

More than 80 people have applied to become Sark's new dairy farmer.

The island is looking for someone to lead a new community project after the old farmer retired last year, leaving the island without a commercial facility.

The push for applicants has attracted people from across the world and those behind the project say the interest has been good, with lots of credible applicants.

A newly refurbished World War Two bunker will be open to the public for the first time on Saturday.

The Flak Emplacement at Pembroke has been buried under tonnes of soil since the end of the German occupation.

After considerable work on the site, it will be opened along with a command bunker as part of the Guernsey Heritage Festival.

People wishing to visit the site are asked to park near Pembroke Beach Kiosk and look for the start point to collect more information.

Roy Godfrey is back at loose-head after the birth of his first child last weekend and replace Harry Morley.

He will captain the side in the absence of second row Jerry Sexton, who will move to South African Pro14 side Southern Kings in the summer.

Sexton is replaced by Charlie Beckett, while in the back row Janco Venter comes in for Conor Joyce.

A St Helier constable has described concerns over a trial closure of a Jersey road as "splitting hairs".

Jersey's Chamber of Commerce is concerned the closure of the road between Liberation Square and Weighbridge Place will not give accurate data on how it will affect drivers and buses.

It is due to close next week ahead of a States debate on whether it should be made more permanent.

Alderney's Chamber of Commerce has condemned plans by Aurigny to pull part of its operation out of the island.

The airline is closing its operations control centre and outsourcing it to Gatwick instead.

It's reported seven members of staff in Alderney are set to lose their jobs.

Andrew Eggleston said the redundancies would have a "bigger effect" than the numbers suggested.

Aurigny said it hoped the move would improve customer service and that it was committed to providing services to Guernsey and Alderney.

It strongly rejected accusations it was acting against the best interests of its shareholder, the States of Guernsey.

The Parishes of Jersey football team will play their second match in June.

The island side, which plays in the Conifa federation for non-Fifa footballing nations, will face the Isle of Man on Saturday 1 June.

The two sides will play at Northern Premier League Division One side Ossett United's ground in Yorkshire.

Jersey's side made its debut against Yorkshire in October with a 2-1 win at St Peter.

Environmentalists in Guernsey are calling for a ban on the use of a herbicide in the island.

Guernsey Trees for Life says the use of glyphosate on local fields is damaging the island's biodiversity.

Glyphosate is a popular weed killer used by gardeners and landowners, but it was recently banned in France.

The charity is calling for its use to be reconsidered.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has said glyphosate was unlikely to cause cancer in humans.

However, a US jury found in March that a glyphosate-based product one of the world's most widely-used weedkillers was a "substantial factor" in causing a man's cancer.

International aid charities have thanked the people of Jersey for their generosity in helping the victims of Cyclone Idai.

Jersey Overseas Aid pledged £180,000, which was split between three charities.

Broadcaster and adventurer Ben Fogle has thanked the island on behalf of the British Red Cross.

The bailiff is Jersey's chief judge but a new phone directory has printed the wrong name.

Guernsey's politicians have handed responsibility of looking into the island's runway extension to the Economic Development Committee.

An amendment had been placed by Deputy Charles Parkinson, head of Economic Development, that he drives the work moving forward, taking it from Policy and Resources.

Politicians said the island hoped to get more airlines to fly in if the runway was extended.

Debate on spending up to £700,000 on further investigations into a possible extension continues in the States from 09:30.

Politicians have also been given an alternative motion, which would resolve no further work on the issue should be carried out.
