The head of Guernsey's health committee has admitted that pay for nurses in the island is not transparent.

Nurses are asking the Policy and Resources Committee (P&R) to increase their pay rate to bring it in line with other professionals locally, with members of the Royal College of Nursing holding a demonstration at the Town Church on Saturday (pictured).

Deputy Heidi Soulsby said she sympathised with health workers who had campaigned for pay that's equal with other health professionals in the island.

She said: "At the moment, it's complete mess of a lots of different bits and bobs, different allowances... it's not very transparent for people to understand what they are entitled to."

P&R, which acts as an employer for nurses, said the States was to look to balance any pay increases to nurses.

Jersey's chief minister has seen his call for a politician to be elected to oversee debates when the bailiff or deputy bailiff are unavailable fail.

Deputy John Le Fondre's proposal was rejected 16 votes to 31.

Route de la Hougue du Pommier has now opened say Guernsey's emergency services.

Guernsey's emergency services are dealing with a three-motorbike crash.

A spokesman said the road from the Junction of La Hougue Du Pommier/Route Des Carteret and from Les Ormes Residential Home is currently closed and islanders are asked to avoid the area.

Sensors will start to test the quality of the air around Jersey schools at the beginning of the next school year.

It follows concern about the affect pollution can have on people in areas where traffic can build up.

Experts are also looking at other locations and hope to install up to 300 sensors across the island.

Environmental health staff will look at the results to help the States make a policy on keeping the air clean, the States said.

it is wrong for Guernsey deputies to attack the author of the damning report into Home Affairs, the head of the health committee says.

Professor Catherine Staite's report, external, commissioned by the island's Policy and Resources Committee (P&R), concluded the Home Affairs Committee's "governance falls below acceptable standards".

However, Deputy Carl Meerveld has raised concerns over what he said was a conflict of interest as Prof Staite is the wife of the chief executive in Alderney.

Deputy Soulsby said she was not happy with the response from some deputies to the Home Affairs report.

A States member is to ask Jersey's chief minister to come forward with a population policy as a matter of urgency.

Deputy Kevin Pamplin is to question Senator John Le Fondre after Jersey's population rose by more than 1,000 people for the fourth year in a row.

Latest figures show there are about 106,800 people in Jersey.

It is understood ministers hope to announce a new population strategy early next year.

The post office at the Jersey Evening Post (JEP) offices in St Saviour is due to close on Thursday, 5 September.

The JEP has run the post office since January 2017 but has served notice to Jersey Post in advance of a planned development of the Five Oaks site.

Jersey Post said it was reviewing potential options within the area.

The States is to vote on her proposals, which the Chief Minister Senator John Le Fondre is not supporting.
