Guernsey's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 1.7% between 2017 and 2018, according to new figures published by the government.

GDP is the sum (measured in pounds) of the value of goods and services produced in the economy.

The total GDP for the island was £3.3 billion, which translates to a per capita figure of about £52,500.

The report also outlines the island's Gross Value Added (GVA), a similar measure to GDP which factors in the impact of taxes and subsidies on product to the overall figure.

Total GVA for 2018 was estimated by their report to be £3.2 billion.

Other key statistics from the report:

• The island's GDP per capita is 65% greater than the UK as a whole
• GVA per capita is 29% larger than Jersey's
• The finance sector remains the largest single contributor, accounting for 41% of the island's GVA
• Non-finance industry sectors contributed 51%, with households making up the final 8%
• However, productivity decreased by 1% in real terms from 2017 to approximately £100,000 per worker

Proposals to clear out glasshouses and turn them into storage units on Oatlands Lane in St Sampson’s have been put on hold by the Development and Planning Authority (DPA).

DPA members said they voted to defer a decision while they sought further clarity from planners about their intentions for the area.

In a meeting that lasted more than four hours at Beau Sejour, members of the DPA seemed to ebb and flow in their take on the plans.

About 60 people turned out to listen to the discussion, and speakers objecting to the proposals said they’re worried about the impact on the “character” of the area, and road safety. Planners said there was potential for a "significant contribution" to the wider area.

DPA board members were split in their conclusions, and wanted to introduce minor conditions before approving the plans, such as soundproofing the site to reduce noise pollution.

Discussions between the authority, planners and local residents will continue at a later date.

Guernsey's top political committee has written a letter offering "full cooperation" with an official review into education recruitment on the island.

President of the Policy & Resources Committee, Gavin St Pier, said they would provide the Scrutiny Management Committee with "relevant" material, witness testimony, and "written statements and supporting material" from civil servants and the government.

The planned review was announced after controversy surrounded the recent appointments to key civil service positions, including allegations of interference on the part of the head of the committee in charge of education.

Deputy St Pier also recognised that the "unscheduled review" by the island's main political oversight body is an urgent matter, offering extra resourcing if necessary.

Children accidentally started a big furze fire near L'Etacq after burning their school shirts or blazers when they finished for the summer, Jersey Police say.

Crews tackled the fire near Mont Huelin for two hours just after 21:00 on 16 July.

It is believed the children were burning the items on a rock and some dropped off into the dry furze.

A police spokesperson said they gave the children strong words of advice and the youngsters apologised.

Footballer Emiliano Sala was exposed to harmful levels of carbon monoxide before he was killed in a plane crash and it is likely his pilot was also affected, accident investigators said.

Tests on the striker's body found enough evidence of the harmful gas to cause a heart attack, seizure or unconsciousness, an interim report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) stated.

It is likely that pilot David Ibbotson was also "affected to some extent" by exposure to carbon monoxide, the document added.

Footballer Emiliano Sala and his pilot David Ibbotson had been exposed to harmful levels of carbon monoxide in the cockpit of their private plane when it crashed in the English Channel on January 21, the Air Accident Investigation Branch said.

Two people have been arrested in connection with a spate of burglaries in Guernsey at the end of July, police say.

Six burglaries, all between the junction of Les Amballes and the Bouet and the Pitronnerie Industrial Estate, took place overnight on 27 July, with thousands of pounds of cash and goods stolen.

Two 19-year-old men have been arrested and released on bail, pending further inquiries, Guernsey Police said.

People leaving Jersey's Waterfront car park can pay at the barrier with chip and pin or contactless bank cards.

The States-owned Jersey Development Company, which runs the car park, has brought in a new system.

However, staff added that drivers could continue to use a pay machine on the wall.

Staff are at the car park are showing people how to use the new system.

Guernsey Airport is spending £1.5m on additional staff and new security equipment, including a full body scanner.

The scanner will be in place by the end of September.

Airport authorities will also work with security firm G4S to recruit and train more staff to help reduce queues and personal searches, issues which have been a cause of passenger complaints for months.

Head of Aviation Ash Nicholas apologised to passengers, acknowledging that the service that has been provided has "not been acceptable".

Jersey's States hope to encouraged more islanders to purchase electric bikes by reintroducing a grant scheme.

The scheme will allow people to get £150 off a bike when they buy it from any participating shops.

Bike shop owner Aaron Lappage wants people to know that they can buy bikes that can "carry anything", including children "and other cargo".

"E-bikes are really replacing bikes in a lot of way and they are definitely the future of cycling," he added.
