A team of Guernsey archaeologists has discovered an Iron Age skeleton in Alderney.

The skeleton, uncovered on Monday, was found with some form of neck ring and bracelet.

The discovery was made by a team including the States archaeologist Phil de Jersey and the director of Guernsey Museums, Jason Monaghan.

It sits in sand that is understood to have eventually overwhelmed the Iron Age site.

This in turn sits below the remains of Roman buildings.

The team in Alderney contains an expert on human bones and so it's hoped they will be able to find out more about the age and sex of the skeleton.

    BBC Radio Jersey

St Clement is being asked to declare a climate change emergency and pledge to becoming carbon neutral within a decade.

Plans being debated at a parish meeting later aim to ensure as much polluting carbon is taken out of the environment as is put in.

Jersey's States Assembly agreed earlier this year to aim to be carbon neutral by 2030.

St Helier, Grouville and the States Assembly have already committed to similar initiatives to the St Clement proposal.

The coroner confirmed 68-year-old Pamela Nisbet died from a stab wound to the neck on Tuesday 6 August.

No family members were present at this morning's hearing.

But a statement was read out in which Mrs Nisbet's husband Andrew Patric Nisbet says he stayed with his wife until paramedics arrived at their home.

The coroner agreed to release Mrs Nisbet's body for cremation on Friday.

  7. Sports fields and library space could be cutpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    BBC Radio Guernsey

A cut in sports fields and library space will have a negative impact on young people in Guernsey, according to a prominent critic of plans to transform education in the island.

Carl Meerveld claims the move to one school over two sites will see the amount of land occupied by States-run secondary schools halved.

Deputy Meerveld has already publicly criticised the education committee for publishing its business plan for the reduction in the number of secondary schools too close to the States debate on the issue next week.

He says that doesn't give deputies enough time to digest and respond to the issues it raises.

One of those issues, he says, is what he describes as a shocking reduction in the amount of land available.

Deputy Meerveld claims the total land area will be halved, with space taken up by sports fields reduced to a fifth of current levels and library space cut by half.

He has already been criticised by the education committee for attempting to delay the debate on the future of schools.

Security delays at Guernsey Airport are continuing to put people off travelling to the island, according to a member of the Committee for Economic Development.

Deputy Joe Mooney says he's still hearing a lot of complaints about passengers having to wait too long for security checks.

He says Guernsey will benefit from new 3D baggage scanning equipment due to be introduced in all UK airports by the end of 2022.

Ministers in Westminster say the technology will boost security, speed up pre-boarding checks, and could end the restrictions on travelling with liquids and laptops.

Airport bosses in Guernsey are yet to comment.

  10. Some States services could be 'abandoned'published at 09:20 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    BBC Radio Jersey

St Helier Deputy Geoff Southern fears some States services could be at risk as a result of Ministers' plans to save £100m over the next four years.

He is calling for regular reports to consider the impact of the proposed cuts.

Deputy Southern says some government services could be "abandoned" and given to the private sector in a bid to save taxpayers' money.

He wants backbenchers to have the power to reject them.

Ministers are seeking to balance the books by 2023, through a series of savings.
