  1. New deadline for Gaza hospital evacuationpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

Amid the ongoing evacuation from northern Gaza, the Palestine's Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has received a revised deadline of 13:00 GMT (16:00 local time) to move patients and staff from their Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City.

In a statement, external, posted to X, the PRCS says an initial deadline of 03:00 GMT (06:00 local time) was given. This was then revised to midday, before finally being changed to this afternoon.

It adds, however, that they cannot evacuate the hospital and it is obliged under a humanitarian mandate to continue providing services to the sick and wounded.

  2. Israel acting according to international law - IDFpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

Israel is acting according to international law, a military spokesperson insists following accusations that the forcible evacuation of people from northern Gaza amounts to a war crime.

Lt Col Richard Hecht, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was responding to comments made earlier today by Jan Egeland, a former diplomat who was involved with the Oslo Accord and facilitated talks between the Palestinians and Israel.

"We're not putting people in trucks," Hecht tells the BBC News channel. "We're telling people to move south. Hamas could move them if they cared about them - it's their responsibility."

He also suggests fleeing Gazans stay with relatives or take a tent, saying he is sure they will "find places to stay".

Reflecting on Saturday's attack, Hecht says: "This is something we have never experienced as a nation since the Holocaust. What you saw on Saturday - that's the war crime."

He adds: "We will not lose our humanity. We are not them - we are not them."

  3. Pro-Palestinian rally under way in central Londonpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    The rally in London

A sizeable crowd has built up outside the BBC’s Broadcasting House in central London for a march by pro-Palestinian protesters.

The demonstration - which will make its way to Whitehall where the UK government is based - is made up of people of all ages and several families with children. A small group wearing the kippah, the traditional Jewish skullcap, are also taking part.

One group unfurled a giant Palestinian flag as organisers and protesters chanted, "Free, free Palestine - occupation is a crime". Others carried banners reading "Stop arming Israel".

  4. BBC Verify

How we verified video of strike on fleeing Palestinianspublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

We've been reporting that at least 12 people, including young children, have been killed in a strike on a Palestinian convoy fleeing northern Gaza via a designated evacuation route.

We were able to do this because of video footage from the aftermath of the strike, which we verified the location of.

Understanding when and where a piece of video was filmed is key part of understanding major developments in conflicts like this.

At BBC Verify we analysed two videos of the strike on a convoy of vehicles heading towards southern Gaza. The videos are highly disturbing, with images of numerous dead bodies - including young children - that are far too graphic to show.

However, they also offer details as to the location of the incident.

We knew that the 45-km Salah al-Deen road, which runs north to south across Gaza, is being used as one of the main evacuation routes. Local reports also suggested the strike had occurred on this road.

The footage shows a central reservation and several buildings whose aerial profile and arrangement we were able to match to a particular section of the road.

Free-to-use online software which analyses the angle of shadows told us that the footage was shot at around 17:30 local time (13:30 GMT) - presumably shortly after the strike.

  5. Fleeing Palestinian convoy was struck on designated evacuation routepublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

The strike on the convoy of civilians in Gaza that we've been telling you about comes as Gazans are being told by Israel to head south on designated routes.

The strike happened on one of those two routes.

More than a million Palestinians were told on Friday to relocate ahead of an expected Israeli ground offensive. And today, Israel has said it is giving those civilians in northern Gaza another few hours to leave.

The evacuation area includes the whole of Gaza City and two major refugee camps, Jabalia and Beach Camp.

Taken together, this represents one of the most densely populated parts of the Gaza Strip - you can see a map of the area below.

Human rights organisations have said such a mass movement of people will inevitably prove chaotic and extremely hazardous - the UN called a movement of this many people in a short time frame "impossible".

  6. Qatar and Saudi Arabia 'categorically reject' evacuation of Gazanspublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

Qatar and Saudi Arabia both say they categorically reject the forcible displacement of Palestinians inside Gaza, after Israel called on Gazans to leave the north of the territory and head south.

A statement from the Qatari foreign ministry says it is calling for the "lifting of the siege of the Gaza Strip, and provide full protection for the Palestinian civilians according to the international and humanitarian laws".

Similar remarks were posted on X, external by the Saudi foreign ministry overnight.

It also called for the provision of relief and medical supplies to Gaza residents, "especially as denying them these basic necessities in order to live in dignity amounts to a violation of international humanitarian law".

Reports first emerged yesterday evening of a strike on a convoy of vehicles heading towards southern Gaza. Videos showing the carnage at the scene emerged shortly afterwards.

BBC Verify has confirmed the strike occurred on Salah-al-Din street; one of two evacuation routes from north Gaza to the south.

The road was full of traffic all day yesterday as Gazans based in the north adhered to Israeli warnings to vacate the area.

At least 12 dead bodies are visible in the footage, which is too graphic for us to show.

They are mostly women and children - some of whom appear to be as young as two to five years old. The positioning of shadows in the video suggests it was filmed at around 17:30 local time.

Most are seen lying on the back of flatbed truck – others are scattered around the road. Other damaged vehicles also litter the area.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says 70 people were killed at the scene, and blame Israel for the attack.

The Israel Defense Force (IDF) says it is investigating but said its enemies are trying to prevent civilians leaving the north.

BBC Verify will continue to monitor the situation and report any updates.

  8. Dead Hamas commander was freed in 2011 prisoner swappublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

More on the death of Ali Qadhi, the Hamas commander who led the militant group's attack on southern Israel a week ago.

The Israeli military said that "aircraft killed Ali Qadi, a company commander of the Hamas 'Nukhba' (elite) commando force".

According to the Israel Defense Force, the 37-year-old was one of around 1,000 Palestinian prisoners released in 2011 in exchange for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who was captured by Hamas.

In 2005, Qadi was arrested for the kidnap and murder of an Israeli man who was reported to have worked for the Shin Bet internal security agency.

Russia says its deputy foreign minister hopes to meet representatives of Hamas in the Gulf state of Qatar next week to discuss the release of Israeli hostages, according to Russian state-owned news agency Ria-Novosti.

Moscow has been styling itself as a potential peacemaker, BBC Russia editor Steve Rosenberg says in his latest digest. He mentions, too, that Russia has ties to both Hamas and Iran - which is believed to be involved in funding the militants.

Mikhail Bogdanov told Ria-Novosti he "did not exclude" meeting Hamas representatives during his trip, adding: "If they are willing, we always are in favour of contact.

"Especially in this situation [the meeting] would be useful for solving practical issues, including the freeing of hostages."

  10. Analysis

This conflict has the capacity to engulf the regionpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    Jeremy Bowen
    International Editor

I don’t think anybody really knows at this point what we are heading for and that is one of the most discomforting things.

While the status quo was not very satisfactory to anybody, a week ago, there was a status quo.

Now, that has been blown to bits and instead there is uncertainty, with all thoughts of any kind of rapprochement with Saudi Arabia gone – at least for now.

People thought there was a new reality in the Middle East – that the Palestinian issue, although it continued to fester, could be contained.

And I have lost count of the number of people who have scoffed at me when I said that this conflict has the capacity not just to cause immense suffering and bloodshed, but to blow up the region.

And sadly, I think now we have seen that the idea that it could be managed - or was more or less over - was an illusion.

Tributes are pouring in for Issam Abdallah, a video journalist for the Reuters news agency who was killed on Friday in southern Lebanon, amid escalating violence along the country’s border with Israel.

Abdallah was working near the village of Alma al-Shaab, close to the Lebanese-Israeli border, where clashes between militants - including from the Lebanese group Hezbollah - and the Israeli military have intensified. This is the first civilian death in Lebanon since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out, a week ago.

On social media, Abdallah has been described as funny, intelligent, and deeply caring. “Issam was the sweetest colleague. He let me take a kitten I was nursing on assignment once, and made it a bed in his helmet,” Erika Solomon, a former Financial Times and Reuters correspondent in the Middle East, said on X, formerly Twitter.

Shortly before Abdallah was killed, he posted on Instagram a picture of himself wearing a helmet and a flak jacket with the word “press” written on it.

Six other journalists, including from Reuters, Al Jazeera and Agency France-Presse, were wounded. One of them, Reuters video journalist Maher Nazeh, said the teams “were filming missile fire coming from the direction of Israel when one struck Abdallah as he was sitting on a low stone wall near the rest of the group”, according to a report published by the news agency.

Seconds later, the report added, another missile hit the car being used by the group, setting it aflame. Some of the wounded journalists remain in hospital, and Abdallah’s funeral will be held later today in south-east Lebanon.

Richard Hecht, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman, said the army was “deeply regretful for the incident” and that it was “actively investigating it”, without saying whether the group of journalists had been hit by the Israeli military.

More now from Lord Darroch's interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

The former diplomat and UK national security adviser said there are three things outside players can do to minimise the devastation of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

First, he reiterated his advice for governments to call on Israel to allow more time for their evacuation of Gaza ahead of its expected ground offensive.

Lord Darroch also urged leaders to "echo" top US diplomat Anthony Blinken's advice that Israel “must operate by the rules of war” in its response to the Hamas attacks and try to minimise civilian casualties.

"Third, we need to try to ensure there is no escalation [in the West Bank], which means talking to [Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas," he added.

On this point, Lord Darroch said the leadership in the West Bank should "try their best... to calm things down".

He said: "There will be a lot of anguish in the West Bank about what's going on in Gaza. People will want somehow to retaliate, but that's only going to make things worse... and lead to more bloodshed".

It is not yet clear whether Hamas, which controls Gaza, will allow US citizens to leave the territory.

  18. Darroch: UK must urge Israel to extend evacuation windowpublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

Lord Kim Darroch, former British ambassador to the US and ex-UK national security adviser, says more time must be given to Gazans to leave the north of the territory to avoid a humanitarian "catastrophe".

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Lord Darroch said he thought an Israeli ground offensive aimed at eliminating Hamas would fail, while the next generation of Palestinian fighters are "already being radicalised".

Lord Darroch also said he would advise the UK government - which has reiterated its support for Israel and has condemned the attacks launched by Hamas - to urge a slow-down of the 24-hour window for people to leave northern Gaza.

He said he would also urge ministers to tell Israel to "think carefully about the operation".

"But I'm an outsider now," he adds.
