  2. The difference between live and blank roundspublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 27 October 2021

Officials in Santa Fe say lab testing will be carried out to determine the types of ammunition found on the Rust film set.

Blanks can be used in the film industry to imitate live ammunition. The reason they are so convincing is that blanks are essentially modified real bullets.

While the term "bullet" is commonly used to describe what is loaded into weapons, more properly it is a cartridge that is loaded: a self-contained ammunition package made up of a casing holding an explosive powder that when fired, blasts out a projectile, or bullet.

Blanks differ because although they use explosive they don't use a projectile.

Much of the investigation into the shooting is still to be completed, but today's news conference gave us some interesting new details of the incident:

    • The "lead projectile" recovered from the director's shoulder was "the live round that was fired from the revolver by Mr Baldwin", the sheriff said.
    • Three individuals handled the weapon and have been cooperating with police. Baldwin shot the gun, but Rust's assistant director David Halls and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed also handled the firearm.
    • According to the county sheriff, the shooting took place with about 90 to 100 people on set.
    • About 600 items of evidence have been collected, including three firearms and 500 rounds of ammunition.
    • Police identified the firearm shot by Baldwin as an antique-edition F LLI Pietta Long Colt .45 revolver. They have also recovered the spent shell casing.
    • All three firearms still need to be analysed in a crime lab. Police believe that, while they contain blanks and dummy rounds, there may be more live rounds in the mix from the set.
    • It's still too early to say whether there will be any charges filed related to the incident.

Officials made clear today that the investigation is still in its early stages.

During the news conference, Santa Fe county sheriff Mendoza said evidence testing was still underway and there are many interviews to be done.

He noted some elements seem clear at this point.

"I think the facts are clear - a weapon was handed to Mr Baldwin. The weapon is functional and fired a live round killing Ms Hutchins and injuring Mr Souza," he said.

But there are still questions about the suspected presence of other live ammunition on set.

"Right now we’re gonna determine how those got there, why they were there - because they shouldn't have been there."

  5. Rust producers hire lawyers for investigationpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 27 October 2021

Lawyers for the producers of Rust will be conducting an investigation into the shooting on set.

The law firm Jenner & Block has just confirmed to BBC News that it will represent the producers.

The legal team will be led by Brandon Fox, a former federal prosecutor.

Fox previously had a two-year stint as criminal division chief with the Los Angeles US attorney's office.

Calls have been made for more safety on set in the light of Hutchins' death

Every film set, big or small, has a prop master or armory expert to handle guns and other weapons.

They secure the weapons when they are not being used and instruct actors on their proper and safe use.

They also load the firearms and check them before and after each scene.

But there is no definitive set of regulations on the use of firearms across the film industry.

Incidents like the one on the set of Rust are incredibly rare, but calls have grown for a ban on live firearms on film sets.

  8. District attorney: 'All options are on the table'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 27 October 2021

Santa Fe district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies says much of the investigation remains to be conducted.

"If the facts and evidence and law support charges, then I will initiate prosecution at that time," she said.

Nobody has yet been arrested or charged over the incident.

"All options are on the table at this point," says Carmack-Altwies.

"I do not make rash decisions and I do not rush to judgment," she adds.

The county sheriff states that other live rounds of ammunition may have been on the Rust set.

The bullets are yet to be tested in a crime lab, according to Sheriff Mendoza.

Of the recovered 500 rounds of ammunition, there was "a mix of blanks, dummy rounds and what we are suspecting is live rounds."

  10. 'Lead projectile' recovered from shoulderpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 27 October 2021

Sheriff Mendoza says police have recovered some 600 items of evidence - including three firearms and about 500 rounds of ammunition from the scene.

He says investigators believe they have the firearm which was fired by Alec Baldwin, as well as a spent shell casing from the shooting.

He adds that a "lead projectile" was recovered from the shoulder of Rust's injured director - Joel Souza - and handed over as evidence.

"We regard this specific spent casing and recovered projectile to be the live round that was fired from the revolver by Mr Baldwin," Sheriff Mendoza adds.

Investigators have said the man who handed Alec Baldwin his weapon was assistant director Dave Halls.

Halls reportedly called out "cold gun" as he did so, meaning the weapon had no live ammunition.

Press agency AFP reported on Monday that Halls had been dismissed from a previous film production in 2019 over gun safety violations.

Colleagues and peers have paid tribute to her as “an incredible artist” and “a wonderful mother”.
