  1. Fairly quiet scenes around Fulton Countypublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

    Kayla Epstein
    Reporting from Atlanta

I've just landed in Atlanta, where Donald Trump is expected to surrender to authorities tomorrow and a steady stream of his alleged co-conspirators have appeared for booking at the Fulton County jail.

Not long ago, Rudy Giuliani, Trump's personal lawyer and his highest-profile co-defendant in the Georgia case, was booked into the jail a little earlier.

The surrender comes just hours before the first Republican debate.

As things stand, the Fulton County courthouse - about a 20 minute drive from the jail - maintains a heavy police presence outside but is otherwise a fairly standard scene.

That will certainly change in a couple weeks' time if District Attorney Fani Willis is able to hold Trump and his co-defendants to a 5 September arraignment date.

  2. A one-time prosecutor finds himself accused of 13 crimespublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

    Sean Dilley
    North America correspondent

Rudy Giuliani was one of the highest profile advocates of baseless claims that Donald Trump was cheated out of the White House.

Giuliani met Georgia lawmakers three times in December 2020, where he's alleged to have made false statements about widespread election fraud.

The former New York mayor told reporters earlier that he felt "very, very good" about handing himself in - claiming that he felt he was standing up for the rights of all Americans.

He also said he was the same Rudy Giuliani that once took down the Mafia.

Now the one-time prosecutor finds himself accused of 13 crimes - including racketeering.

  3. Former NYC mayor's bail set at $150,000published at 20:37 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

The bail bond for Rudy Giuliani has been set at $150,000 - the second highest sum in this case, after the $200,000 set for Donald Trump himself.

When he left Manhattan earlier on Wednesday, he told reporters he was “fighting for justice” in Georgia.

Sidney Powell, another lawyer charged in the case, had her bond set at $100,000 earlier today. Another county elections official also charged in the case had her bond set at $10,000.

Defendants in criminal cases normally have to post 10% of the total. The rest will be taken if they do not show up for trial.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who went on to serve as Donald Trump's personal lawyer, has just turned himself in.

His booking sheet, on the Fulton County Sherriff's website, describes him as a white male, who is 5 ft 9 inches tall with "grey or partially grey brown" hair.

There are 13 offences listed underneath his name, including conspiracy to commit filing false documents and the solicitation of violation of oath of office by a public officer.

One of the lawyers who took a prominent role in Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the election has become the latest to turn herself in, according to listings on the Fulton County Sherriff's website.

Most known for her vow to "release the Kraken", Sidney Powell embraced the unfounded theory that the election had not been conducted fairly.

She is alleged to have been involved with an illegal breach of election data in Coffee County, Georgia, in an attempt to find evidence of voter fraud.

  6. The elephant in the GOP debate roompublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

    Sam Cabral
    Reporting from Milwaukee

There will be eight candidates on stage tonight at the first Republican primary election debate - but the elephant in the room is who is not there.

Donald Trump, the dominant frontrunner for the 2024 nomination, will not be sparring with his rivals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He will instead feature in an interview with ex-Fox News star Tucker Carlson on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The interview will air at 20:55 ET (01:55 BST) - five minutes before the debate begins.

The former president has cited his "legendary" lead over the rest of the field - nearly 50 points in some polls - and argued to advisors and rally crowds that he sees little use in being attacked on stage by low-polling competitors, particularly the two anti-Trump candidates Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson.

His absence is also an escalation of a feud with Fox News. The debate is hosted by the conservative-leaning cable news channel, and top executives have reportedly tried for weeks to convince Trump to show up.

By choosing to instead sit down with its former top-rated anchor, who is in his own contract dispute with Fox, Trump may steal the thunder - and the ratings - while being miles away from his fellow candidates.

As we wait to hear more about Donald Trump's co-defendants surrendering, it's worth remembering that in just a few hours the first debate is scheduled to take place between Republican candidates vying for the 2024 US presidential nomination.

That'll happen in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, more than 800 miles from Atlanta.

We already know that Trump - who opinion polls consistently place well ahead of his Republican rivals - is skipping the occasion.

"The public knows who I am and what a successful presidency I had," he wrote on his Truth Social platform over the weekend.

"I will therefore not be doing the debates."

  8. Who is Rudy Giuliani?published at 19:06 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

Donald Trump's former personal attorney made a name for himself years ago as New York City's mayor, receiving praise for his leadership in the wake of the September 11 attacks of 2001, which earned him the nickname "America's mayor".

But in recent years, Rudy Giuliani has made headlines for his ties to Trump and his relentless promotion of election fraud conspiracy theories.

In the wake of the 2020 election, which Trump lost to Joe Biden, Giuliani travelled to different battleground states across the country claiming the election was rigged against Trump.

In Georgia, Giuliani and others are charged with violating the state's racketeering statute over attempts to overturn election results. The racketeering law is one that Giuliani used heavily during his time as a US attorney in New York to take down mafia bosses.

The former New York City mayor is expected to surrender at Fulton County Jail today - his lawyer Brian Tevis has been pictured nearby already.

"I'm feeling very, very good about it," Giuliani told reporters on Wednesday. "I feel like I am defending the rights of all Americans, as I did so many times as a United States attorney."

  9. Trump's plans to turn himself inpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

The former president has said he'll surrender at Fulton County Jail, in Atlanta, tomorrow afternoon.

In a post today on his social media site, Truth Social, he said: "Nobody has ever fought for election integrity like President Donald J Trump.

"For doing so, I will proudly be arrested tomorrow afternoon.”

At the jail, Trump is expected to be booked like all other defendants, including getting a mug shot taken and being fingerprinted.

On Tuesday, those who surrendered were:

    • Bail bondsman Scott Hall
    • Former Trump lawyer John Eastman

Today, the list grew to include:

    • Former Georgia Republican Party chairman David Shafer
    • Former Coffee County Republican Party chair Cathy Latham
    • Trump’s former Georgia attorney Ray Smith
    • Trump campaign attorney Kenneth Chesebro

Trump’s former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani is expected to turn himself in today too, with Trump himself set to surrender tomorrow - at which point he says he'll "proudly be arrested".

  11. Recap: What the Georgia election case is aboutpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 23 August 2023

Donald Trump and 18 others are facing charges for their attempts to overturn the former president's 2020 election loss in Georgia to Joe Biden.

Last week, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis filed 41 charges against Trump and his co-defendants, including racketeering, election fraud and making false statements.

She alleges Trump and his allies participated in a broader scheme in a bid to meddle in Georgia’s election results.

The charges come after a years-long investigation Willis launched after Trump made a phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in 2021 asking him to “find” 11,780 votes, the number he needed to beat Biden.

Trump has denied the allegations, claiming Willis is carrying out a politically motivated probe against him.
