Family portraits of a 'transitional generation'

This year, the US Supreme Court made the landmark decision to legalise same-sex marriage across the US. But residents of Massachusetts had already been given marriage rights in 2004 - though without any of the federal benefits they received after the Supreme Court decision.

Photographer Jeannie Simms revisited many of the families who first married in Massachusetts 11 years ago, along with other gay couples who had married since then. The result is a collection of family portraits that offer a look at gay marriage in the US today.

The photos are being shown at Gallery 263 in Cambridge, Massachusetts until 19 December.
