Nicola Roberts says she's been working on new products for 18 months

Nicola Roberts says she's thankful to Girls Aloud fans for supporting her second career as a make-up designer.

The singer has just relaunched her Dainty Doll range created for women with pale skin.

She told Newsbeat that she needed the break from the group so that she could work on something different.

She said: "I wouldn't have been able to create the line if we'd have been non-stop like we were with the band, the way we were working."

Nicola Roberts originally launched the Dainty Doll range in 2008 as part of ITV2 show The Passions Of Girls Aloud but only produced a small number of products.

Over the past 18 months the singer, 24, has been working on a bigger selection.

She says it's been a personal journey: "I think so many women out there start with a lot of insecurities about their skin tone and whatever it is about their hair or whatever is they feel a little bit uncomfortable with.

"Obviously being in that position and being able to come through that and create a new line has been something that has been very important to me and something that I've had to get right."

Ideas

The Dainty Doll range has 10 products in it including an eyeliner pencil for £10 and a lip balm costing £20.

Nicola Roberts says she's been working all hours to get it all finished, including waking up her boyfriend Charlie Fennell in the middle of the night.

She said: "Poor Charlie. I've been waking him up at one o'clock in the morning [to say], 'I've had this great idea. What do you think about this idea?'

"He's like, 'I was asleep. I don't want to be talking about lip gloss'. It's pretty much been on my mind the whole of the time and a new little idea or a thought can pop up wherever you are."

The singer was joined for drinks after the Harrods relaunch by fellow Girls Aloud members Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh.

But X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, who's recovering after having malaria, and Nadine Coyle, who's back in the UK, didn't turn up.

She said: "I think she's [Nadine] getting ready for her record to come out so it's all good. Everybody's happy and doing their own thing."

Girls Aloud last performed together in September 2009 supporting Coldplay and Jay-Z at Wembley Stadium.

They're currently in the middle of a year-long break.
