New music champion Huw Stephens is to take over Jo Whiley's Radio 1 weekend slot between 1pm- 4pm from March.

He'll be keeping the second part of his Wednesday night slot from 12am to 2am as well.

Matt Edmondson will replace him in the earlier 9pm to 10pm slot with a brand new show.

Huw says: "I love presenting on Radio 1 and can't wait to present my own weekends show. Taking over from Jo is a real honour."

New sounds

After 17 years at the station, championing Britpop, Glastonbury and the Live Lounge, Jo Whiley leaves to front a new evening show on BBC Radio 2.

Huw became the youngest ever Radio 1 presenter when he joined the station at 17 in 1999. He's built a reputation within the music industry for being a tastemaker and for supporting new and unsigned acts.

He says: "My current shows give me the chance to dig deep and champion exciting emerging music and I look forward to adding new sounds to my weekend shows."
