Katy Perry's Teenage Dream has become the first album in more than six years to score four number one singles on America's Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her latest track, E.T. featuring Kanye West, has gone to the top of the chart following her success with California Gurls, Teenage Dream and Firework.

Usher was the last artist to have four number one singles off the same album with 2004's Confessions.

Teenage Dream is only the ninth album to have achieved the record in the US.

The album is the first to have four number one singles by a solo female artist since Mariah Carey's debut record in 1990.

Katy Perry told Billboard.com: "I am so thrilled that E.T. has landed at number one.

"I want to thank all the fans who contributed to this amazing feat and radio, which has been an essential part of my continued existence.

"I truly appreciate all the support of my creative twists and turns."

Katy Perry's 2008 album One Of The Boys only managed one top single in America, I Kissed A Girl, which stayed at number one for seven weeks.

The US singer, who married British comedian and actor Russell Brand last year, hit the headlines earlier this week after Calvin Harris announced on Twitter that he wouldn't be performing on the remaining dates of her UK tour.

The 26-year-old is performing in Cardiff tonight (1 April) with gigs still to come in Newcastle, Birmingham, Glasgow and London before she flies to Australia at the end of the month.
