Jason Derulo said he was thrilled to be UK number one

US singer Jason Derulo has said he hopes to move from chart success to Hollywood stardom.

The singer told Newsbeat he is a trained actor and now has his sights on being a leading man.

"I actually went to school for acting," he said.

Derulo added laughingly that one day he could even become the first black James Bond.

The 21-year-old's current single Don't Wanna Go Home is number one in the UK official singles chart.

"To be number one in the UK is amazing," he said. "I just want to thank all the fans out there.

"You guys are killing it, thank you so much."

Derulo says he is flying back home to Miami this weekend to complete his new album Future History. Once that is finished he told us he has his sights set on Hollywood.

Ladies' man

"After this album cycle I'm gonna dive into some movies," he said.

"The new album is the greatest accomplishment of my life thus far man, so I'm really excited to share it.

"There are a few collaborations which I will keep and remain nameless for now.

"It has something on there for everybody - I was 19 when I wrote and recorded my first album, I'm 21 now so it's a different perspective and you'll see that."

The singer-songwriter has definitely been a hit with the ladies in the UK.

During his visit to our studios he was mobbed by fans who had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of him.

So it begs the question, is he single or in a steady relationship?

But Derulo is keeping his cards close to his chest.

He hesitatingly told Newsbeat: "Er... I'm enjoying life you know. It's enjoyable, it's good, you know, it's good."

Derulo has been writing songs since his was a teenager, for artists including P Diddy, Sean Kingston and Lil' Wayne. He is also a trained dancer.

Jason Derulo's new album Future History is due to be released in September.
