EastEnders' omnibus programme has moved permanently from Sunday to late on Friday night, the soap has confirmed.

A statement on its website said: "This slot is closer to the original transmissions and will be more consistent as it will not need to be moved for sporting commitments."

This week's omnibus will be shown on 14 April from 0.05 - 02.00am.

The long-running Sunday afternoon slot would have clashed with this summer's Olympics and Euro 2012.

Producers played down the change and said many fans were now able to watch the soap in their own time.

"Viewers now catch up on EastEnders through a variety of means such as the PVR, our BBC Three repeat or on iPlayer," said a spokeswomen.

"This slot is closer to the original transmissions and will be more consistent as it will not need to be moved for sporting commitments."

The change began on 6 April when the first Friday night programme pulled in 477,000 viewers, compared to 792,000 for the last ever Sunday omnibus.
