The next series of Doctor Who is to return to BBC One on Easter Saturday, 30 March, the channel has confirmed on its Twitter feed.

The next show in series seven will be an episode written by Steven Moffat.

The previous one was a Christmas special which saw the Doctor, played again by Matt Smith, take on The Snowmen with new assistant Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Her character died at the end of programme.

She was first seen at the beginning of series seven in Asylum of the Daleks with the Time Lord vowing to travel through space to track her down again.

Doctor Who's previous assistant Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and her husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) left the show in the previous episode, The Angels Take Manhattan.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, with more special programmes and events due to be announced.

A new series of Doctor Who stories is also set to be published monthly this year.
