Police say platinum-selling rapper 2 Chainz was robbed in San Francisco hours before he was scheduled to perform at a concert.
Sergeant Dennis Toomer from the SFPD says he was walking with five members of his entourage near the downtown area of the city on Sunday afternoon.
They were approached by three men, one of them holding a handgun.
Toomer says one shot was fired as the rapper had his mobile phone and wallet stolen.
Police say the suspected gunman drove away in a grey car.
But the rapper has down played the incident on his Twitter feed: "Rule #1 if a rapper gets robbed people usually post items that has been taken. Rings, chains, watch, money etc. 2 answer that question...Rule#2 if a rapper gets shot he usually go to hospital or dies."
The Atlanta-based rapper, whose real name is Tauheed Epps, was in San Francisco to perform at radio station KMEL-FM's annual Summer Jam concert on Sunday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
The 35-year-old's debut record, Based on a T.R.U. Story, was released last year and made it to number one in the US Billboard 200 album chart.
He was also nominated for three Grammy music awards.
