30 Seconds to Mars rocked the main stage of Download as German metal band Rammstein headlined the event.
The US rockers played hits from all four of their studio albums including Kings and Queens and The Kill.
They also announced a UK tour for November during their set, while Jared Leto brought fans on stage for the final song Up In The Air.
"I love how fan-orientated they are," said 18-year old Danika Ulrich from Wrexham.
"When they got the fans up on stage I was just gutted I wasn't one of them."
Sixteen-year-old Katie said she was pleasantly surprised by their performance.
"It was unexpected how good they were because I have seen the likes of Iron Maiden but it was amazing," she said. "I was glad I came to see them."
Billie Jay Priestly, 18 and from Jersey, said: "It was amazing. It was the third time seeing them, best show ever."
The 30 Seconds To Mars singer wasn't the only one to bring fans on to the main stage.
Lead singer Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch brought children from the crowd up for their final song during the best sunshine all weekend.
German metal act Rammstein brought Download Festival to a close for 2013.
The band, who have sold more than 50m albums worldwide, used a range of pyrotechnics throughout their performance.
At one point, their microphone stands were set on fire and they wore flame thrower masks.
Jason Newsted, former bassist with Metallica, was also at Download to play with his new band.
He first played at Donington Park in 1987 when it was known as Monsters of Rock.
"There was one stage, one little mud pit like this right here, one maybe two places selling beer, " he explained.
"Look at us now, it just shows that when something is as real as this metal music is, it's so important for the fans to feel a part of something, that's really what is special about our music."
Other acts to play on Sunday included newcomers Blitz Kids who opened the second stage.
Slipknot's Corey Taylor took to the main stage for a second time playing with his other band Stone Sour.
Festival organiser Andy Copping announced the dates for next year's Download festival, which will be held on 13, 14 and 15 June 2014.
