Amanda Bynes has been taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

The 27-year-old actress is thought to have started a small fire in the drive of a home in California.

Police were called out on Monday night and found Bynes standing next to the flames in the city of Thousand Oaks, said Capt. Don Aguilar of the Verona County sherriff's department.

Officers decided she met the criteria for a 'mental health hold' and took her into custody.

Aguilar says no charges have been filed.

Bynes can be held in hospital for up to 72 hours of observation.

The actress is known for her film roles in Easy A and She's the Man, as well as her roles on Nickelodeon television shows as a child star.

She is currently on probation in California for driving on a suspended license.

Bynes has also pleaded not guilty to driving while under the influence in a separate case in California.

Her account on Twitter has more than 3 million followers and she is known for being a frequent user of the site.
