One Direction star Zayn Malik and Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards have announced their engagement.

Malik's mother told Real Radio, external that her son had proposed at the weekend with Edwards wearing a diamond ring at the premiere of One Direction: This Is Us.

A spokesman for Hackford Jones PR said: "Zayn and Perrie are engaged, but any further detail regarding their relationship is private."

The pair, both 20, have officially been dating since last April.

They met on the set of The X Factor in 2011 when One Direction sang on the ITV show.

Little Mix went on to become the first group to win the TV contest after being mentored by Tulisa Contostavlos.

Perrie Edwards' mother, Debbie, told Gary and Lisa from Real Radio North East: "It's true. They got engaged on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely.

"It's wonderful because Zayn's absolutely gorgeous and Perrie loves him to pieces and it's just perfect.

"They just get on so well together and they understand each other so it's just fabulous."

Perrie Edwards attended the One Direction premiere with bandmates Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, although Jesy Nelson wasn't at the event in London's Leicester Square.

Thousands of fans of the boy band waited for hours for them to appear.

Zayn Malik now has a cartoon version of Perrie Edwards tattooed on his right bicep.

At the premiere, Perrie Edwards didn't let on that the couple had got engaged, saying: "I'm proud of my boyfriend but we're really proud of all the boys."

One Direction is made up of Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan.

They finished third on the 2010 series of The X Factor and have since released two albums and won two Brit Awards.
