Green Day and Biffy Clyro headline Reading and Leeds

Green Day have headlined the first night of this year's Reading Festival while Biffy Clyro topped the bill in Leeds.

The US punk rockers played hits including American Idiot and Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong ended their set alone on stage singing Good Riddance (Time of your Life).

The band also played their 1994 album Dookie in full halfway through their performance.

Biffy Clyro ended their rain-affected Leeds set with their track Mountains.

Other bands that performed in Reading on Friday included Wiley, Skrillex, System of a Down and ASAP Rocky.

Frank Turner was introduced on stage by Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and his mother, who said she had tried to talk him out of appearing after he injured his back.

He began his set seated in a wheelchair and revealed that he had to wear a back brace to perform.

Bastille drew one of the biggest crowds of the day on the Radio 1/NME stage with crowds of fans forced to watch the set from outside the tent.

Meanwhile Bring Me the Horizon managed to get the crowd at the main stage to create a circle mosh pit around the sound tent.

Leeds saw performances from Fall Out Boy, Haim, Knife Party, Alex Clare and Azealia Banks.

The Lumineers got the crowd going with their hit Ho Hey.

"It's been a really amazing festival season for us because we got to play Coachella and Glastonbury," they said.

"For our first time out for a festival season we got really, really good slots."

Bedford band Don Broco played the main stage at Leeds for the first time on Friday.

Guitarist Simon Delaney said performing at both festivals had been a dream of theirs for a long time.

"Reading was always the festival we came to when we were really young kids and we saw all our favourite bands play it," he said.

"It will always have a special place in our hearts because we grew up with it."

On Saturday Green Day travel to Leeds for their second headline set in two days.

It is forecast to rain there for most of the day.

Eminem tops the bill at Reading with other performers including Chase & Status, Alt-J, Foals and Jake Bugg.

Showers are forecast at lunchtime.
