Enter Shikari, The XX and Vampire Weekend were among the winners at the AIM Independent Music Awards.

The event celebrates independent labels and their artists as well as unsung heroes from throughout the music industry.

British post-hardcore band Enter Shikari were named best live act, beating Johnny Marr and The National.

It follows them debuting their live side project, Shikari Soundsystem, at Reading and Leeds festivals this year.

"We came down to present [an award], not to take [one home], so it was awesome," said Shikari frontman Rou Reynolds.

Drummer Robert Rolfe added: "It means a lot more when it's coming from people who are in it for the right reasons.

"It's too easy to jump into the major label route and just do it for the money."

The XX picked up best difficult second album for Coexist.

"It feels lovely," explained singer Romy Madley Croft. "It's nice to win something, we weren't expecting it,"

"All we know is independent labels, we've never worked with a majors [labels].

"I do feel there's something special and personal and human about working with our label XL and Young Turks, it feels like they are really on a level with you."
