Pixar: No new releases in 2014 as films pushed back

The Good Dinosaur is based on the idea that dinosaurs and humans co-exist

Disney has announced the release dates of two new Pixar films have been delayed.

The Good Dinosaur will now be in cinemas on 25 November, 2015. It was scheduled for release in May 2014.

The Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory, has also been delayed. It will come out in summer 2016 instead of late 2015.

Pixar's rescheduling means that next year will be the animation studio's first year without a feature film release since 2005.

"Nobody ever remembers the fact that you slipped a film, but they will remember a bad film," said Pixar's president, Ed Catmull.

"Our conclusion was that we were going to give the [dinosaur] film some more time."

Last month it was announced that Bob Peterson, who was originally named as the director of the film, would no longer be involved in the production process.

A replacement for Peterson hasn't been named yet.

Finding Dory writer Andrew Stanton says the films' large budgets combined with the amount of time and staff needed to make the movies puts a strain on the resources of the studio.

He told the LA Times: "We can't have the amount of labour it takes to do these movies at the same time because it becomes unsustainable economically.

"But it means if one director has a problem, everybody's connected to the same bed sheet. You pull one end and it makes wrinkles in the other one. It's a new problem."

Before The Good Dinosaur hits screens, the studio is set to release Inside Out, a film set inside the mind of a young girl, in June 2015.

These delays mean the gap between Pixar's most recent release, Monsters University, and Inside Out is the longest period they've gone without a new release since 2004's The Incredibles was followed by Cars in June 2006.

The latest film in the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise has been delayed

The announcement follows Disney's Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also being delayed.

It follows the poor performance by Disney's The Lone Ranger, which reportedly cost $215m (£136m) to make and has grossed $243m (£154m) worldwide to date.

Last week, Universal Pictures said the next film in the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World, is set for a 12 June 2015 release, nearly a year later than previously stated.
