Emmy Award-winning comedian Conan O'Brien is to host this year's MTV Movie Awards.

He announced the news on his TBS talk show, Conan earlier this week.

The annual movie celebration that honours winners with popcorn-shaped trophies is scheduled for April 13 in Los Angeles.

This will be the first time O'Brien has hosted the awards show. He previously hosted the Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006.

Conan joked: "After eight years of intense negations, I am honoured to announce I am hosting MTV's second most prestigious awards show.

"There's only one award in the world that truly matters. I'm talking about the MTV Movie Award. The golden popcorn. Isn't she beautiful?" he said.

"I am proud to announce that I, Conan O'Brien, will fulfil my lifelong dream and host the MTV movie awards," he added, holding the statuette up to the camera.

O'Brien famously took over from Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show but only lasted seven months. He currently hosts the late night talk show "Conan" on TBS in the US.

Comic movie The Avengers was one of last year's big winners, picking up three out of a possible four prizes.

This year's nominations will be announced on March 6. Categories will include Best Villain, Best Kiss and Best Breakthrough Performance.

The 50-year-old is following Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson, who hosted last year's show. Other hosts of the MTV Movie Awards have included Jimmy Fallon, Aziz Ansari and Russell Brand.
