DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong and Zane Lowe will kick off Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow with a huge outdoor party.

They will be joined by some of the world's biggest DJs on Friday 23 May to host the event for 14,000 music fans live from George Square.

Other DJs involved in the event will be announced in the coming weeks live on air.

Tickets for Friday's free-ticketed party will be available on Radio 1's website from next week.

There is no charge for the event itself, but a handling fee of £2.50 per ticket will be applied to cover ticket handling, postage and other associated costs.

Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac said: "Glasgow crowds are known the world over for being special in terms of the energy they bring.

"It's such an honour to start the weekend with my fellow Radio 1 DJs in the iconic George Square. We're going to bring some serious DJ names with us.

"It's going to be a night to remember."

Rhys Hughes, head of programmes at Radio 1 and 1Xtra, said: "Some of the best DJs in the world will be taking to the decks at George Square.

"They will no doubt set the scene for what is going to be an amazing weekend of live music in Glasgow."

Paolo Nutini was the first artist confirmed for Radio 1's Big Weekend

Last year's Radio 1's Big Weekend in Londonderry was headlined by Calvin Harris, Biffy Clyro and Bruno Mars.

This year the station's flagship event will be held at the city's Glasgow Green between 24 and 25 May.

Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini are the first artists confirmed with more names to be announced.

More than 50,000 people are expected to watch their favourite acts.

This summer will also see Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In the lead up to Big Weekend, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Learning will also open the doors to Radio 1's Academy from 10-16 May.

During the week, Radio 1 hopes to inspire local 16 to 19-year-olds by inviting them to attend a series of radio shows, master classes and Q&As.

Big Weekend, which will be produced in partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, will be broadcast live on Radio 1, 1Xtra and streamed on the Radio 1 website, external.

Highlights will also be broadcast live on BBC Three.

Further ticketing details will be announced in March. Listeners will need to stay tuned to BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra for details.
