Hermione Norris to star in Doctor Who with Peter Capaldi

Crimson Field actress Hermione Norris is to appear in the new series of Doctor Who.

The show, which is filming in Lanzarote, is back on BBC One later in the year.

The actress, 47, will appear alongside the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, who has taken over from Matt Smith.

Norris, who has also starred in Cold Feet, Outcasts and Spooks, said: "It's exciting to be part of such an iconic show, and one that my kids can watch."

The episode is being written by Peter Harness, who is behind episodes of Swedish crime thriller Wallander.

Other guest stars already announced to join Capaldi later this year include Ben Miller, Tom Riley and Keeley Hawes.

The show's main writer and producer Steven Moffat said: "It's a testament to the quality of Peter Harness's intense and emotional script that we've been able to attract an actress of the brilliance of Hermione Norris.

"And for the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote.

"The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure - but there have been sinister changes since his last visit."

Peter Capaldi, 55, is the 12th actor to play the Doctor.

He is best known for his role as spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in the BBC series The Thick of It and has also appeared in The Musketeers, Skins and Torchwood.

The actor played Roman merchant Caecilius in a 2008 episode of Doctor Who called The Fires of Pompeii.
