It's been revealed that Diana had to leave the series after episode four due to illness

If you didn't know better, looking at Twitter you'd think a crime had been committed on Wednesday night on Great British Bake Off.

There were calls for Diana Beard, who at 69 is the show's oldest contestant, to be told off, disqualified and even arrested.

And for what? Taking Iain's baked Alaska out of the freezer, which, if you believe Sue Perkins tweet, wasn't even the reason it collapsed in a pile of ice-creamy goo.

But it probably didn't help.

It all ended with Iain chucking out his baked Alaska and then bringing the bin up to the judge's table for presentation. Needless to say, he was booted out of the competition.

On Thursday morning an emotional Diana appeared on BBC Shropshire to tell her side of what is being called the Bake Off "meltdown" (see what they did there?)

"We are 12 amateur bakers. No prize money involved. Why would I want to sabotage Iain's baked Alaska?" she told presenters Eric Smith and Clare Ashford.

"Iain does not hold me responsible at all for his failed ice cream. In fact he rang me three days ago to warn me that the knives were out."

She said the editing has "disappointed" her and that the baked Alaska was only out of the freezer for 40 seconds.

"This has made it look like some cut-throat competition. It's so far from the truth. We helped each other," she said.

A tearful sounding Diana added: "I've lost my integrity really. Anybody that knows me, knows I haven't that sort of bone in my body really. I've been stitched up haven't I?"

Iain has since tweeted: "Guys no hard feelings now. Diana is a top lady and all us tent bakers are greats pals."

In a statement the BBC said: "As shown in the episode, Iain became the fourth baker to leave the tent because he didn't present Mary and Paul with anything to judge in the showstopper challenge and both judges were very clear about the reasoning behind the decision.

"Due to the extreme temperature in the tent that day, many of the bakers struggled to get their ice cream to set as seen in the episode.

"Diana removing Iain's ice cream from the freezer for less than a minute was in no way responsible for Iain's departure.

"Diana will not appear in the rest of the series as she fell ill ahead of filming episode five earlier this year."

The BBC says it has received 556 complaints about Wednesday night's episode.

Watchdog, Ofcom, has now confirmed it will not be investigating the show despite the complaints. It says none of the issues raised break any of their rules.
