What do Buzzcocks and Mumford and Sons have in common?

It might sound like a strange question but the answer is that they have both, at different times, played Leeds music venue the Cockpit, which has just announced its doors are closing for good.

"It is with great regret that we have to announce the permanent closure of the Cockpit," a statement reads., external

"After 20 great years as an integral pillar of the Leeds music scene we have decided that it is no longer viable to deliver you the level of service you deserve with the building in it's [sic] current condition."

It had previously been claimed in mid July 2014 it was only closing temporarily while "essential maintenance work" was carried out.

Opening in 1994, it's been the venue of some huge bands: everyone from Amy Winehouse and Kaiser Chiefs to the White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Less than Jake, Placebo, Vampire Weekend, Plan B, Jake Bugg, London Grammar and many more.

But they have also been host to some smaller ones many dedicated music fans have been to.

Personally speaking a lot of my sixth form years, and many others', were spent listening to friends' bands - quite often shouting out "Oi" over distorted guitars - local punk-rock bands and all sorts of other performers.

Reading comments on The Student Room forum a little while ago, "what would you wear to a night out at Cockpit? On a Friday night? Heels or no heels?" one comment reads, external.

It was a daring person, as the replies discuss, who challenged their ankles on a floor that so much drink was spilled on to.

It was a mainstay of student nightlife, of music fans and anyone who wanted to dip their toe into either.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you who came to watch your favourite bands, danced, stage dived, crowd surfed, found your life partner and gave the Cockpit its reputation as one of the best live music venues in the UK," the statement says.

Good bye the Cockpit. If the comments pouring in on Facebook, external are anything to go by, you will be missed.
