Facebook launches a Messenger app for internet browsers

You know what it's like when you just want to send a quick message to a friend and then you get distracted.

You check out your mate's latest holiday snaps and join an in-depth thread about something you didn't know you cared about.

Well, now Facebook's launched a desktop version of its messenger app to make it easier for us to keep in touch without getting sucked into a time vortex.

You still need an account but it's separate from the rest of the site.

It looks like the mobile apps, only bigger and you don't get a load of communication options but you can set up notifications and mute conversations.

You can also send stickers, photos and emojis.

Some industry insiders are speculating whether this is paving the way for Facebook to separate out more of its services, like Newsfeed.

Other users reckon it'll change the way we use our mobiles.
