For the The De Zwann Michelin-starred restaurant in the Netherlands, asparagus season is exciting.

In the rush to get the freshest spears to their kitchen, the restaurant always marks the start of the season with some kind of stunt.

In the past, hot air balloons and even a race car have been used to deliver the precious vegetables.

This year, they decided to use a drone. It went very badly.

Ronald Peijenburg, the owner of the restaurant, was confident of this year's stunt.

With drones in the news for all kinds of reason, it was a great opportunity to get some publicity - it worked, the operation was going to be filmed by a local TV crew.

At first, everything seemed to go well - the drone, carrying a metal tin of asparagus spears, took off with its precious cargo, its pilot (and owner) following on in a van behind.

After a quick stop to recharge its batteries, the drone was off again - but something went wrong.

The aircraft fell back to earth and went up in flames, taking the asparagus with it.

After the crash, Peijenburg told the local broadcaster Omroep Braban: "Yeah, that wasn't funny. You think you have a cool idea - with a drone - how original can you be? Picking up asparagus with a drone.

"This is very, very sad because it was an amateur pilot, the owner of the drone, who organised this especially for me and brings his own toys. So this wasn't supposed to happen of course."

So a disappointed restaurateur and an unhappy pilot - but all was not lost. Replacement asparagus was picked, and transported via more traditional means.
