Sam Smith has been forced to pull out of his Australian tour due to bleeding on his vocal cords.

The singer is just half way through an eight-date tour.

He was also due to perform at the TV Week Logies, the annual Australian television industry awards.

Writing on the tour website, Sam said having to cancel the tour "killed" him, but that he was on doctor's orders to rest.

"I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour," Sam wrote.

"I have been vocally exhausted for a while now, however last night in Sydney I had a small haemorrhage on my vocal cords.

"The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal cords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue.

"I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am.

"This kills me."

Tour organisers say Sam will reschedule all his cancelled shows in December, with fans who had tickets to the tour given first refusal next time around.
