"Everyone keeps going to their devices because of fear of missing out," he told The New York Times.

"I'm constantly going on Instagram, Twitter, wondering what's going on in my friends' lives. What am I missing?

"I want that for radio. What's on right now, right now, that I didn't know I wanted to listen to?"

He also said he's sure Beats 1 will be a success, although he's secretly dreading what could happen.

"The whole thing could be a total, abject disaster," he said.

"When an artist goes on to have a brilliant career and five years later we can look back and be proud of whatever role we had in that."

He said his move to Apple was such a big secret that his children didn't know they were moving to Los Angeles until a 'For Sale' sign appeared outside their house.

The idea for Beats 1 came from Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, chief creative officer at Beats Music and one of Apple Music's key designers.

"I wondered if in today's world there is still a place for monoculture. Can that still exist?"

Earlier this week, Taylor Swift announced her album will appear on the tech giant's new streaming service, which Beats 1 is part of.

She challenged Apple over the fact they weren't planning to pay royalties to artists during Apple Music's three-month free trial period.

The service will allow users to stream singles and albums and is set to cost $9.99 (£6.30) per month in the US for one person or $14.99 (£9.50) for families.
