One Direction sweep Teen Choice awards, but miss ceremony

One Direction were the big winners at the Teen Choice Awards - topping eight categories.

The British boy band took best male group, tour, single, love song, party song and best summer music group.

They were collectively named best male hottie, ahead of Zayn Malik - who quit the band in March.

The boys also beat Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger to scoop the selfie taker prize.

1D are still on tour - they're playing a gig in Colombus, Ohio on Tuesday - so the four missed the ceremony in Los Angeles.

They did send a short video message - clutching one of their surfboard-shaped awards.

Harry Styles spoke for the group and offered a "massive, massive thank you" to the teens who'd voted for them.

The girls thanked their fans - the "incredible Mixers" - for voting for them. Jade Thirwell said: "This is our first ever American award, so it's such a big deal for us."

Ed Sheeran beat Sam Smith to be crowned best male artist. Ed's track Thinking Out Loud also won him an award, again triumphing over Sam's Lay Me Down.

Hozier's Take Me to Church came out top in the rock song vote.

Taylor Swift was best female artist and her hit Bad Blood scooped best break-up song. She was named best "Twit" - recognising her abilities on Twitter. For tweets like this...

Iggy Azalea, Drake, Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd and Kanye West were all in the running for best R&B/hip hop artist, but Wiz Khalifa took most votes.

In the movie section of the awards The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and its stars Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence ruled in the sci fi/fantasy votes.

Pitch Perfect 2 picked up several comedy awards, with Anna Kendrick taking best comedy actress and best hissyfit.

While Cara Delevingne lost out in the modelling category to Kendall Jenner, the British model was recognised as breakout star and summer movie star for her acting role in the film Paper Towns.

Furious 7 won several awards, including one for its star Paul Walker - who was killed in a car accident before finishing the film.

Friends and co-star Vin Diesel spoke on behalf of the Furious 7 cast, who he described as being "a family".

"Paul Walker is here in spirit with us," Vin told the teenage audience . He then paid tribute to one "very special teen" in the crowd - Paul's daughter, Meadow Walker.
