Ever wondered what Bella would be like if she was a man - or how Edward would act if he was a female vampire?

No - neither have we.

But if you have - wonder no more.

The main characters of Twilight have swapped genders.

Author Stephenie Meyer thought it would be "fun" to make the mysterious Edward become Edyth while the brooding Bella is now a boy named Beau.

The book was revealed on Good Morning America., external

Speaking on Good Morning America Meyer revealed that to mark 10 years since Twilight began there would be a new book called Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined.

The cover has even changed from a hand holding a red apple to a green one.

It's told through the eyes of Beau, partly because Stephenie Meyer says she wanted to respond to critics who said Bella Swan, who was played by Kristen Stewart in the films, acted like a damsel in distress.

Critics said Bella Swan acted like a damsel in distress

"My answer to that has always been that Bella is a 'human in distress', a normal human being surrounded on all sides by people who are basically superheroes and villains," Meyer explains.

"She's also been criticised for being too consumed with her love interest, as if that's somehow just a girl thing.

"I've always maintained that it would have made no difference if the human were male and vampire female - it's still the same story."

The book started out as just a couple of chapters but Meyer says it soon turned into more than 400 pages because it was "really fast and easy" to write.

"I thought, 'What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does?' and, you know, it's about the same.

"The further you get in, the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different, but it starts out very similar and it really is the same story because it's just a love story and it doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl, it still works out.

How will fans react to Edward, played by Robert Pattinson in the films, becoming Edyth?

"I wonder if it will change how people look at Bella a little bit, to see her as him?"

But will there be a Twilight Reimagined movie to follow?

No, according to Meyer.

"I don't really see that happening and a lot of the people I'd put in it would be like Grace Kelly so it's a little too late for some of my first choices."
