Strongbow's YouTube spoof and seven other banned alcohol adverts

A YouTube advert for Strongbow has been banned for suggesting booze is as important as relationships.

It's based on a character called Carl who wins the "Best Strongbow as my other half" award at a spoof ceremony.

In an acceptance message he praises the drink saying: "I love you. I've loved you since the first day I met ya. And I always will do. My dear Strongbow."

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled it implied alcohol was "indispensable".

Heineken, which owns the cider brand, had argued it was a "tongue-in-cheek parody".

It said saying viewers were "highly unlikely" to seriously believe it portrayed Strongbow as a life essential.

The video's now been deleted four years after it was first posted, following a complaint by the Youth Alcohol Advertising Council and charity Alcohol Concern.

But it's far from the first alcohol ad ever to be banned...

1. Courage

This one was banned for suggesting beer could increase confidence.

The ASA had complaints from three people who said the poster implied drinking beer would give the man pictured confidence to either make negative comments about the woman or take advantage of her.

2. Budweiser

One Budweiser radio advert featured an American football coach giving a motivational talk before a lads' night out.

"You were conceived on a night like tonight," he tells the cheering men.

He adds that before they go for that "ice-cold" beer they should put an extra two minutes in front of the mirror, because they'll "never know" who they might meet.

The ad was found to be linking alcohol to sexual success.

3. Lambrini

Lambrini's "big night in" advert was banned for giving the impression alcohol is important for social success.

It shows women getting dressed up ready for a night in together, dancing, laughing and pouring glasses of Lambrini.

Another complaint that the ad showed alcohol "changing mood and behaviour" wasn't upheld.

4. Heineken

In 2013, Heineken was found to have condoned illegal drinking.

Its TV ad showed alcohol being drunk at a stadium in sight of a football pitch (which is a crime in case you didn't know).

It also showed glass bottles being brought into a football stadium - which isn't allowed either.

5. Captain Morgan Rum

The Diageo rum brand was forced to remove this Facebook advert last July.

The ASA ruled it broke its rules by suggesting alcohol could conquer boredom.

6. Coalition of UK Brewers

This advert showed three people in different situations "in need of a beer".

One meets his girlfriend's dad for the first time, another finishes a hard day work and the third is having a barbeque.

It was banned after the ASA found it broke rules by implying alcohol made people popular and was important for social success.

7. WKD

Another ad banned for implying alcohol could enhance confidence and is vital to the success of a social event.

The Facebook page for WKD showed a picture of the drink with the caption: "WKD 8 BALL Weekend Prediction YOU WILL REFUSE TO DO KARAOKE. AT FIRST"
