Rihanna's new album Anti goes platinum
- Published
Rihanna only just released her long awaited eighth studio album on Thursday this week but it's already gone platinum.
And it's all down to how she released Anti, which initially was on an exclusive deal with Jay Z's streaming service, Tidal.
A platinum album is certified by the Recording Industry Association of America as selling at least one million copies.
Samsung gave away one million free download codes to its mobile phone users.
Each of those downloads came with a 60-day free trial to Tidal.
Rhianna confirmed that her album had already hit platinum status on her Twitter account., external
That's less than two days after release - for the eagle eyed - possibly breaking the record set by Adele's third album, 25 late last year.
According to the Official Charts Company, external, Adele sold more than 300,000 copies after 24 hours on sale.
Rihanna also thanked all her fans for the success of Anti., external
According to TorrentFreak, Anti is also proving popular on illegal sharing websites.
In a statement, the site's owner, Ernesto told Newsbeat: "The Rihanna Deluxe edition of Anti is currently the most shared album on public torrent sites.
"It's safe to say that tens of thousands of people have downloaded a pirated copy via BitTorrent alone today."
But the 27-year-old's new album launch hasn't been problem free.
There was the "leaked" picture with details of her new album which turned out to be nothing to do with her new album.
There have been false release date rumours since the end of last year, but this drop came without much of the normal album launch fanfare.
Anti appeared on Tidal on Wednesday night by mistake, according to Newsweek, external. It was removed after 20 minutes.
According to Tidal, it was streamed more than 13 million times in the first 14 hours of release on Thursday.
On Friday, it was then available on iTunes
But according to Forbes magazine, external, the fact that Samsung pre-bought Rihanna's album before it went on general sale, doesn't mean it will be recognised by those putting together Billboard and other music charts.
In the UK, Rihanna's album is only chart eligible on the Official Albums Chart from the point the album goes on sale. Free downloads don't count toward the Official Chart.
Sales and streams count from Friday, and Tidal are a chart-reporting streaming service.
But there's also good news for Jay Z's Tidal service, because according to Variety magazine, external, thanks to the exposure deal with Samsung, the streaming service has signed up one million trial subscribers.
