Clara Amfo: I am not the only person that's felt loss after a parent died
- Published

In March 2015 Radio 1 presenter Clara Amfo was in France, about to run the Paris half marathon.
"I got a phone call form my sister to say that my dad had passed away.
"I had to come straight home and be plunged into the emotional turmoil that is bereavement, whilst also taking the biggest step of my career, taking over the coveted 10-1pm slot on Radio 1.
"I swear to you I would give it all up if I could just have one more minute with that man."
In the year after her father's death, Clara has explored the impact of losing a parent, on herself and others, in a Radio 1 Stories documentary called Running With Grief.

In a preview for the programme Clara added: "I am definitely not the only person that's felt loss.
"In the UK as we speak, 24,000 children lose a parent every year.
"That's two young people under the age of 16 losing their mum or dad, every hour of every day, yet it's something that we are notoriously bad at talking about."

The documentary also follows Clara re-training for the 2016 Paris half marathon, which took place the day before the anniversary of her dad's death.
"I did panic and think, 'What the heck have I got myself into?'
"But I know I have to do it. I've got people sponsoring me so I don't want to let them down and I do want to do it for my dad."
In the hour long programme she talks openly about the first year without her father including his funeral in Ghana, going to therapy sessions, the music that reminds her of him and her family's first Christmas without him.
She also meets other young people who have lost a parent to find out how it's affected their lives and exploring the idea that "there's no set way to deal with grief - it's a very personal thing".
There's plenty of advice for people who have lost family members and how to help friends who are going through it in Running With Grief.
Support is also available on the BBC Advice pages and child bereavement centres like Oakleaf, external, which is featured in the programme.
Running With Grief is on BBC Radio 1 at 9pm on Tuesday.
