Mabel: I am hungry for more
- Published
"I was probably building Lego or taking a nap," laughs 20-year-old Mabel of growing up in the studio with Massive Attack.
Whether she was distracted by her toys or not, creating music clearly infiltrated her.
She made the BBC's Sound of 2016 in January and continues to be tipped for big things.
What's the connection with Massive Attack? Her Dad, Cameron McVey is their producer.
Oh and her Mum is Neneh Cherry, pioneer of early RnB.
So Mabel definitely has good musical genes, she says she has always been determined to carve out her career by herself.
"It was so nervous about releasing music to be honest," She tells us at the Great Escape Festival where she has just performed.
"I thought people would just going to assume things.
"But my parents have never helped me with my career and that was more for me.
"I wanted to be able to say to myself 'you did this on your own, you are good at what you do'.
That is not to say she is not hugely proud of her parents' achievements, how could you not be?
But every child wants to prove they can do it on their own.

"There was probably a time when I wanted to push them away," she admits.
"Pretend that I wasn't a part of them but I am super proud and I wouldn't do what I do without them.
"I am just going to keep working hard and keep putting music out that I love and then people probably won't care who my parents are."

This could be the beginning of a musical dynasty.
Mabel has a growing fan base but only one fan, so far, has stopped her in the street and not because of her striking resemblance to her famous mother.
"It was so weird," she laughs as she recalls the experience.
"He came up to me and was like 'are you Mabel, I really like your music' and I was like 'Oh My God you listen to my music?' And he said 'yeah well obviously people do' and I said 'I know but I' never met any of them'."

The story doesn't end there with a hug and selfie.
"And then he said 'yeah I followed you on Instagram and by accident you followed me back and then unfollowed me' and I was like 'no I am so sorry' it was so awkward, but he was fine," she tells us.
Mabel has now supported Years & Years on some of their UK dates and is currently working on her debut album.
She says she wants it to flow and be cohesive like her favourite albums, The Miseducation of Lauren Hill and The Writings on The Wall by Destiny's Child.
"I have crazy ambitions that I am not going to share because they are super embarrassing but when I think about all the things that have happened are amazing but I am just hungry for more."
