A Swedish football referee sent a player off for farting on the pitch.

He gave Adam Lindin Ljungkvist two yellow cards, and finally a red, when he broke wind during a match.

The ref called Adam's flatulence "unsportsmanlike" and, according to Adam, thought he was "farting on someone else".

"I was shocked [I got sent off]," Adam tells Newsbeat. "The bench didn't believe me when I came to them and said I got a red card for farting!"

Adam, 25, plays for the Swedish team Pershagen SK, which is on the bottom tier of the Swedish league.

His fart, during a match with rivals Jarna SK, was apparently so loud that other players heard it from feet away.

"I was standing a good distance away but I heard the fart loud and clear," Kristoffer Linde, a striker for Jarna SK, told a local newspaper.

"It's the strangest thing I've seen on a pitch, and I've been playing football since I was eight years old."

It seems that Kristoffer was talking about the punishment rather than the fart, though.

"The other team said they were going to call the media and tell them because it's really weird," says Adam.

"I didn't think they were going to, but today, the story is everywhere. I don't get how a small fart can get so much attention!"

Adam says he's shocked that trumping has made him an internet celebrity.

"Being on Facebook and scrolling down and seeing your own face on The Sport Bible, that's just crazy," he says.

To anyone suspicious that the fuss over the fart is a publicity stunt, Adam says the incident is genuine.

"Believe it or not, this happened," he says.

"Every time I pushed my body I had to fart a little bit. It was one of those days.

"I don't really care about farting - everyone does it, it's a normal thing. But there's always going to be someone who doesn't like it."
